Orogeny Orogeny (mountains formation) = series of processes in the crust that result in formation of mountains
Long-term process (may be even tens of millions of years)
Related to plate tectonics 5
06
Types of mountains According the type of formation:
Fold mountains
Block mountains
Volcanic mountains 6
07
Fold mountains Are formed on convergent plate margins
When plates collide, they tend to buckle and form fold mountains in the process called orogeny (thrusting and folding of rock) e. g. the Appalachian mountains
Sometimes a large sheet-like body of rock is moved above a thrust fold from its original position creating a nappe; examples of such mountains the Alps, the Carpathians, the Himalayas
Important orogenies 7
08
Alpine orogeny
Cenozoic era Important orogenies Hercynian (Variscan) orogeny
Paleozoic era 8
9 Orogeny - video
10
Block mountains the crust can be broken into block by friction faults
the blocks can be raised or tilted along the faults
block mountains is a series of horsts and grabens (the Krušné hory, the Hrubý Jeseník, the Harz) 10
11
Volcanic mountains Are formed by volcanic activity
e. g. the Doupovské hory, the České středohoří, the Massive Central 11 Tato fotka od autora Neznámý autor s licencí CC BY-SA-NC Tato fotka od autora Neznámý autor s licencí CC BY-SA-NC
