Encourage your child to make a repeated pattern in their play e.g. threading beads or building Lego – red, blue, red, blue etc… Encourage your child to see shapes in the environment. Can they recognise any shapes? e.g. a square window, a rectangular door, a round button etc… Encourage your child to see numbers in the environment. Can they recognise any numbers? e.g. door numbers, bus numbers. Sing counting songs and nursery rhymes with your child, Can they join in with the counting. e.g.. 1,2,3,4,,5 once I caught a fish alive or 5 little speckled frogs. Maths at Home EYFS Top Tips! Can your child use language to describe shapes? e.g. pointy, round, flat. Do they know the names of any shapes? Can your child use their fingers or objects to add simple numbers together? e.g. two forks add two forks makes 4 forks. Sometimes use technology when learning about maths, there are some great apps you could use! Can your child say any number names in order? e.g. they could count steps as they go up or down. Set up a pretend shop! Can they use any coins in their pretend play? e.g. ‘that apple will be 5p please’
