EVOLUTION OF THE GALAPAGOS GIANT TORTOISE LESSON PLAN Investigate how these Galapagos giants have evolved to become separate species. How do some people know which island a tortoise is from just by looking at it?
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Science: to identify how animals are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.
STUDENTS’ OUTCOMES: To understand the term adaptation and how animals in different environments are suited to their environment.

KEY VOCABULARY: adaptation, carapace, evolve, saddlebacked, domed,

RESOURCES REQUIRED:
Access to the internet and a whiteboard
Tortoise factsheets
Maps of the islands
Card to make a ‘neck brace’
Branch or similar!
Student explanation of tortoise activity
Teacher explanation of tortoise activity
Island habitat images picture sheets
Plasticine or similar
Explanation of Evolution cubes activity
Evolution cubes templates on card FIRE STARTER:
Introduce the children to the Galapagos Giant Tortoise using the Top 10 Galapagos giant tortoise facts animation the webpage.
You can also read the tortoise factsheets for more information.
GAINING GROUND:
1. Complete the Galapagos giant tortoise activity, where children investigate adaptation of the tortoise. (see notes)

2. Fun fact short activity - How much do you weigh compared to a Galapagos giant tortoise? Do any of the children know their weight? If not, an average 8 year old would be about 25 kilos. On average the tortoises weigh 300 kilos. How many more time heavier is it? The tortoises can grow up to 1.5 m in length. An average 8 year old is about 125 cm. Compare. Measure on the floor space if you have time.

FUTURE FOCUS:
Design and make Evolution cubes (see plan) using the prompt questions for guidance. The children will need to show how the ancestral tortoise evolved over time to become a Saddleback tortoise. © Karel de Pauw 7-11 [notes]
