slide2. FAMILIAR SPIRITS IMPERSONATE HEAVENLY BEINGS 2Co 11:13 -15 For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.

One reason why the devil was able to deceive Eve was because he took on another form: the form of a serpent.

Paul was concerned about the church of Corinth because he felt they were susceptible to deception through impersonation.
slide3. IMPERSONATE There are two types of angels:
Angels with light
Angels without light.
Angels without light are fallen angels. They have no light because they are not holy.
Holiness emits a light, and that is why God is light
In the book of Job, Satan managed to appear before God undetected because he impersonated an angel of light,
“Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them” Job 1:6
God was able to identify him, but his fellow angels could not. If even angels can be deceived, you can imagine how vigilant we have to be.
slide4. IMPERSONATE "They see falsehood and lying divination who are saying, 'The LORD declares,' when the LORD has not sent them; yet they hope for the fulfillment of their word. "Did you not see a false vision and speak a lying divination when you said, 'The LORD declares,' but it is not I who have spoken?"'" Therefore, thus says the Lord GOD, "Because you have spoken falsehood and seen a lie, therefore behold, I am against you," declares the Lord GOD Ezekiel 13:6-9

"Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. Matthew 7:15

Mar.13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
slide5. DIVINATION 1 Sam 28:7-8
Saul’s request was specific. He said, “Divine unto me by the familiar spirit.”
Familiar spirits possess powers of divination. What does divination mean?
1. It means to have supernatural knowledge.
2. It means to be able to predict the future.
The witch had supernatural knowledge about events in Saul’s life even though she was not present when they occurred. In a previous battle God had instructed Saul to kill all the Amalekites and destroy everything. But Saul spared the king, Agag, and some of the valuables. The witch reminded Saul of this event and his disobedience towards God,
slide6. SPIRITUAL GIFTS AND DECEPTION “Because thou obeyest not the voice of the LORD, nor executed his fierce wrath
upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day” 1 Samuel 28:18
The fact that somebody possesses supernatural knowledge does not make him a man of God. There is a genuine spiritual gift, a word of knowledge, which God gave to the church.
“For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit” 1 Corinthians 12:8
slide7. THE COUNTERFEIT OF THIS IS DIVINATION The operation of divination is the same but the source is different.
Psychics use divination.
A familiar spirit can mention your name, address, and telephone number. Charismatic Christians can be so gullible that when somebody has supernatural knowledge they immediately conclude the person is of God.

“Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?” Matthew 7:16
The devil has power, but he does not have the fruit of the Spirit because his nature is essentially evil. That is why he cannot manifest the fruit of the Spirit.
Familiar spirits use supernatural knowledge to deceive, convince, and influence.
slide8. PAUL AND THE YOUNG GIRL IN EPHESUS Act 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:
She had supernatural knowledge. She was the first person to identify Paul as a man of God. She knew it supernaturally because she did not know them from anywhere.
slide9. PREDICTION BY WOLVES “For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock Acts 20: 29

These are people in congregations who mix with the flock to destroy or take advantage of them. They are not there for the “grass” of the Word of God, they are there for blood, to take advantage of the sheep, congregation, or members of the church.

There are sometimes “spiritual people” in the church who claim the powers of the Five fold ministry. They usually do not join the leadership of the church but give private words of knowledge and begin to control other members of the church. They may instruct people to pray and fast because of prophecies and revelations they claim
they have had. Sometimes they even exploit people sexually and financially.
slide10. PREDICTION BY WOLVES Mar.13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect.
They usually hide their operations from the pastor. Some of these people are controlled by familiar spirits. They gain control by divination and progress to control other members of the church through manipulation and prediction.
“Because thou obeyest not the voice of the LORD, nor executed his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day”. 1 Samuel 28:18
slide11. FAMILIAR SPIRITS ARE RELIGIOUS Familiar spirits are difficult to detect because they are highly religious and like operating around churches and men of God. This serves as a camouflage for their operations. Because of this people who use familiar spirits can be confusing and controversial.
The familiar spirit that appeared to Saul was acting like a Christian counselor. He told him about the consequences of disobeying God. He reminded Saul of his disobedience to the Lord when he failed to destroy Agag, the Amalekite king, and all their goods.
Logically it is assumed that if someone advises you to obey God he must be from God. But it was a cover-up. They are wolves in sheep’s clothing.
slide12. THE EXAMPLE OF BALAAM “And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spake unto him the words of Balak” Numbers 22:7
Balaam is a controversial prophet in the Scriptures. He was hired by Balak, the king of Israel, to curse Israel. He failed in cursing Israel because whenever he spoke, the curses were replaced by a blessing.
slide13. Can two opposing spirits operate through a person? It’s possible. Peter had a revelation through the Holy Spirit that Jesus was the Messiah.
“And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven” Matthew 16:17
Within a few minutes Jesus was rebuking Peter for allowing the devil to use him to advise Him against dying on the cross.
“But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men” Matthew 16:23
