slide2. Why is LARC important Lewisham’s rates of Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) prescribed in GPs is lower than the London average and our SEL neighbours, Bexley, Bromley, Lambeth and Southwark.
We have high rates of (repeat) Emergency Hormonal Contraception (EHC) use via the pharmacy service, but low conversion to the use of LARC.
Concurrently Lewisham has a higher rate of abortions than London for all ages, the highest in South East London. Women have commented
“Easier to get an appointment for an abortion than GP appointment for contraception”
LARC uptake in primary care or sexual health services are predominantly from demographics who are white, age 25 to 39, and have coils fitted. Demographics from Black African and Caribbean backgrounds as well as Asian and south Asian populations are considerably lower<br>

slide4. LARC TRAINING LARC: Long Acting Reversible Contraception: Includes Implant, Copper coil (IUD) and hormone Coil (IUS)
I am Lewisham's GP champion for Long Acting Reversible contraception, and i was passed your details as I understand you are interested in LARC training, either Implants or coils or both? There is CPD funding for nurses and pharmacists for development courses. You just needs to fill in an application, with support from your manager, via this website:

It then gets discussed for approval at a panel at the beginning of every month. This will help towards the costs of the exam fees (OTA) and Letter of competence (see table below), the membership fee you may have to pay yourself or you could see if the PCN would reimburse you. Once you have passed your OTA, you can then have the practical training in fitting implants and or coils. This practical training will be supported for free by the pharmaceutical company (contact details below) who will arrange for a trainer to come to your practise to supervise you learning to fit LARC. (A clinic of patients would need to be booked, if you are having any difficulty with this let me know and we can explore alternatives). I have copied in Leanne, who will contact you about support for implant training and Farzaneh for support with coil training. (There details below)

slide6. Recertification Implants: 6 including at least 1 insertion & 1 removal + CPD
Coils: 12 insertions showing at least 2 different types of coil in conscious women + CPD
If you haven't managed to obtain this number then we will be unable to recertify you so it is always better to submit your application to recertify a little later once you have met this requirement.
Please note: The stipulations of recertification is that the procedures must be carried out within a 12 month period within the past 2 years.
This FAQ will give you the full criteria for recertification of the LoCs including any additional criteria which you may have to meet if you are later to submit your forms. If you have missed years of payment you may need to back pain to reinstate membership.
The ten year rule
If it is 10 years or more since your qualification was awarded or last recertified, you will need to retake the full training programme for your qualification. This may be via the experienced practitioner route, if appropriate.<br>
