TEXT (COPY) The text on the DVD’s blurb uses words that we associate with the horror genre. Words like “alone” and “remote” have connotations of isolation and being out of contact with the rest of the world. This highlights that Arthur will be on his own and not be able to rely on anyone for help when at Eel Marsh House.
Other words used also strongly signify the horror genre for example “tortured”, “vengeful” and “terror” these are all words that suggest that horrific things will happen.
The language used also creates an enigma for the audience. The phrase “Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror.” raises the question of whether he will succeed in doing so and forcing the audience to watch the film to find out. The use of this rhetorical question helps establish the genre of the film as it questions whether the audience believe in a common convention of supernatural horrors. The tagline has clear connotations of the supernatural horror genre. The use of the word “curse” has connotations of witchcraft and supernatural beings such as ghosts and poltergeists. The tree is twisted and bare of leaves which signifies winter. A time of death where nothing grows and natural things die out. COLOUR & LIGHTINGTYPOGRAPHY The unnatural, bright, white light in the background and on the text creates an ethereal, ghostly effect. This reinforces the horror genre and specifically has connotations of supernatural horrors which commonly have elements such as hauntings, possessions, ghosts and spirits.
The light is extremely bright and could signify the ‘afterlife’ as it is a widely held belief that when you die you ‘go towards the light’. The cloak that the mysterious figure in the background is wearing is black which has connotations of death and evil. This suggests that the character could be the villain of the story and clearly links to the title of the film.
This also creates an enigma for the audience leaving them to wonder if this is the woman in black. The gold used on the stars signifies quality as we associate the gold colour with being precious and valuable. This suggests the film is of a high quality. The font used for the title ‘The Woman In Black’ seems to be glowing from within and fading away to black at the edges. This contributes to the supernatural feeling of the DVD cover as the letters seem to be disappearing and fading away in the same way that a spirit or ghost might. REPRESENTATION Consider how the following groups are represented in the text: The title of the film represents women in a negative way as the colour black has connotations of evil, death and darkness. All of which are negatives. The use of the word ‘vengeful’ in the blurb suggests that woman are full of spite and will seek revenge when they have been wronged. The image of the woman in black on the cover of the DVD shows her wearing a cloak that obscures her face, suggesting that women may have something to hide or are mysterious in some way. The way the image looks like she is appearing from the mist reinforces the representation of women being mysterious. The black cloak has connotations of evil and demonstrates that, in this text, women are represented as being antagonists. The image of Kipps from the back cover shows him looking up with a scared expression on his face. This represents men as being powerless against certain things as he is clearly looking up at something more powerful than him and from the expression on his face we can surmise that it is something that scares him. The use of the phrase ‘forced to leave his young son’ in the blurb represents men as being responsible and family orientated because if Kipps had not been ‘forced’ then he would have remained to look after his family. The final line on the blurb ‘Kipps must find a way to break the cycle the of terror’ represents men as being heroic and shows that they are the gender to be relied on to solve problems and save the day.
