JOHN XXIII
1881 – 1663 | Pope | 11 October

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born
in Sotto il Monte in Italy.
He was the fourth of fourteen children born to poor parents who were sharecroppers.
He worked as a Vatican official
before becoming pope.
He announced that he was summoning
an ecumenical council to
“bring the church up to date.”
John travelled around Rome freely,
breaking with the tradition that the pope was a ‘prisoner of the Vatican’.
He was welcoming to all,
from Kings and poor people.
