Died: 1547 Henry became king in 1509 when he was just 17 years old after his father died.
Henry VIII is most known for starting important religious and political changes in Europe that have had a lasting impact on modern society.<br>
slide4. Renaissance Man? Henry was known for his good looks, his
athleticism, and his intelligence.
He spoke many languages, was an expert
jouster, and was a great musician.
His many talents
made him quite the
heartthrob!<br>
slide5. Wife #1 Catherine of Aragon was from Spain. She was Henry’s first wife. They had one child
together - Mary, who
would become Queen
of England later on.
However, Henry
desperately wanted a male heir to his throne. When he was frustrated with Catherine, he asked the Pope to annul their marriage, but the Pope refused.<br>
slide6. Wife #2 While he was still married, Henry fell in love with one of Catherine’s ladies-in-waiting. Her name was Anne Boleyn. Henry married her secretly. . . . but she did not produce a male heir, either. She did, however, give birth to Henry’s second daughter: Elizabeth.
Henry could not get divorced, nor could he admit that he had married Anne secretly.<br>
slide7. The Church of England In 1534, Henry broke away from the Catholic Church to start his own church. He declared himself the Supreme Head of the Church of England, or the Anglican Church.
He even passed a new law: that it was punishable by death if one did not accept him as the head of the church. He also finally had his marriage to Catherine annulled.<br>
slide8. Wife # 3 When Anne Boleyn failed to give Henry a son, he had her beheaded. Henry’s third wife, Jane Seymour, finally gave him a son. His name was Edward.
Unfortunately, Jane died during childbirth.<br>
slide9. Wife # 4 Saddened by the death of Jane, Henry agreed to be “set up” with a new wife. Her name was Anne of Cleaves. She was described as fair-haired and remarkably beautiful. Henry agreed to marry her when he saw her portrait.
However, when they finally met, Henry thought she was ugly. He married her anyway, for political reasons, and then quickly divorced her.<br>

Anne of Cleaves, Henry married Catherine Howard. Catherine and Henry were married for almost two years before Henry discovered that she had committed adultery.
Henry divorced her, but then decided to have her beheaded on account of treason.<br>
slide11. Wife # 6 FINALLY, Henry married his final wife: Catherine Parr. Catherine had great relationships with Henry’s 3 children and even had a hand in educating them. She influenced Henry to pass a law that would allow Mary and Elizabeth to take the throne (which they both did later on).
Catherine also was not a stranger to marriage: Henry was her 4th husband.<br>
slide12. Legacy Henry died in 1547 from a jousting injury he got in 1536.
Today, Henry’s legacy includes:
- having multiple wives
- founding the Church of England
- establishing England’s navy
- living an extremely lavish lifestyle
(he built over 50 palaces)
- passing a law that allows for female
heirs to inherit the throne of England
- Shakespeare even wrote a play about
