Summary What is your main question?
Do female sex workers know about PrEP and PEP, and are they willing to take PrEP?
What did you find?
Cis gender sex workers are less aware about PrEP and less willing to take it.
Why is it important?
Different approaches may be required for HIV prevention among specific populations.
03
PrEP and PEP
2012 FDA approval of TDF/FTC daily for PrEP
2021 Oral PrEP in the public system
2024 Oral PrEP in the social security
PEP available in all settings Background HIV Epidemiology in Argentina
140,000 people with HIV
5,300 new HIV diagnosis per year
Concentrated epidemic: HIV prevalence
Transgender women: 34%
Cisgender female sex workers: 3,2%
General population:0,4%
Sex workers face:
Stigma and discrimination
Barriers in access to healthcare Boletín N° 39 Respuesta al VIH y las ITS en la Argentina. Dirección de Respuesta al VIH, ITS, Hepatitis Virales y Tuberculosis, Ministerio de Salud de la Nación Argentina, 2022.
Objective This study aimed to assess knowledge of PrEP and PEP, and the acceptance of PrEP in a cohort of female sex workers (FSW).
05
Prospective cohort (June- Dec 2023)
Baseline and 6 month visits
Population: Female sex workers (cis and transgender women)
Location: Fundación Huésped, Buenos Aires, Argentina (community based organization)
Enrollment with peer navigators and community organizations
Medical and psychosocial evaluations
Rapid HIV test, PrEP offer
Structured questions on PEP and PrEP Methods
HIV prevalence and PrEP acceptance 116 FSW 11 Receiving PrEP
(all TGW) 21 had previous HIV diagnosis 95 unknown HIV status 3 had HIV diagnosis at BSL 84 not on PrEP 23/24 TGW p=0.003 38 (45%) started PrEP 20/30 (67%) TGW 18/54 (33%) CGW
Post exposure prophylaxis 17,1% 25,9% 9,3% 9,8% p=0,9 p=0,3
12
A quarter of FSW had previous knowledge of PrEP, lower in CGW than TGW.
The acceptance was higher among TGW than among CGW.
Future research should focus on understanding barriers to access HIV prevention in CGW and TGW, in order to develop tailored HIV prevention policies. Conclusions
