Nation - A community of people based on their shared history, culture, ethnicity or language. Superpower- a state which has both hard (economic, military, geographical) and soft (cultural) influence to project power globally. Treaty - Agreement Globalisation - trade and technology have made the world into a more connected and interdependent place What is a super power? Future superpowers Just having a big military is not enough to be a superpower – balance is needed. What is a super power?​ The term superpower was first used in 1944 by William T. R. Fox in a book he wrote about the USA, Britain and Soviet Union. Noam Chomsky says that superpowers need a triangle of influence, economic, cultural and military dominance. Hard power Hard power is where a country expresses its influence through coercive (controlling) measures. This can be economic sanctions or military force or threat. Hard power is becoming less common. Countries are beginning to use economic sanctions instead of military force. Soft power Soft power is where a country expresses its influence through its economic, political, moral or cultural influence. It does not physically enforce anything in another country. An example of soft power by America is its cultural exports from its global media TNCS. Globalisation seems to be making soft power more and more important. Superpowers may not need to use military force often, but the threat of it is also important. Military power needs to be mobile (able to travel quickly and far) and far reaching.
