slide4. A morpheme is the smallest unit of meaning within a word.
Each syllable in a word is not always a single morpheme. They must have a related meaning.
An affix is a morpheme that is found before or after a base. Activating Prior Knowledge CFU:
What is a morpheme?
What is an affix? Suffixing conventions

Doubling: In a one-syllable word ending in CVC, double the final consonant before a suffix starting with a vowel

Drop the ‘e’: When a base word ends in a final e, drop the e before adding a suffix starting with a vowel

‘y’ to an ‘i‘: When a base word ends in y, change the y to i before adding a suffix, unless the y is preceded by a vowel or unless the suffix begins with i (-ing, -ish, -ist).<br>
