History The piano was inspired by many string instruments dating back to 1709. Instruments including the harpsichord, spinet, and virginal. String instruments produced sound by the vibrating’s from the tightening of iron wires. They created vibrations by being hit, plucked, or struck. The wires were stretched over bows, gourds, or placed in boxes in order to amplify the sound that was produced.<br>
