Lesson 7. Piano Man Jazz Intro and Accidentals In this lesson, you will review some piano staff basics and discover how accidentals (sharps, flats, and naturals) affect notes while you learn the Piano Man Jazz Intro. Remember, learning how to break complex things into smaller chunks is a strategy you can use in any subject.Before you begin trying to play it, let’s break it down and look at all of the pieces of the sheet music. 7a. Let’s Break it Down!

7a. Jazz Intro- Left Clefs Can you tell the difference between the left hand clef symbol and the r ight hand? Look, the arrow is pointing to the left hand clef called the Bass Clef or F Clef. The symbol almost LOOKS like an F, doesn’t it? A secret-the two little dots surround the F line on the staff. Maybe that’s why it’s called the F Clef.

7a. Jazz Intro- Right Clefs Look below at the clef at the beginning of the staff. The arrow is pointing to the right hand clef called the Treble Clef or G Clef. Can you think of a reason why this clef is called the G Glef ?

7a. Jazz Intro- Time Signature Non-Math-minded Students: Time Signatures are numbers found at the beginning of a staff that tells information about the beats in each measure. Math-minded Students: In 4/4 time, there are 4 beats worth of ¼ notes in each measure. Those 4 beats can be combined or divided into any total of 4 note values possible. In the right hand the quarter rest- 1/4th + 10/16ths + 1/8= 4. (In music, you don’t count the value of any grace note).

7a. Rests: The Quarter Look at the symbol below. This is a quarter rest. It means that the right hand “rests” for one beat. Look what’s under the rest. The left hand plays this DFAC chord and holds it down, the right hand rests for a moment, then begins to play.

7a. Rests: The Eighth Rest Look below at the arrow. This is an Eighth Rest. It means that the right hand “rests” for a very short moment. Look under the rest. This left hand D F Ab B chord is held down while the right hand follows.

7a. Double Bar A Double Bar means the end of a section of the song.

7a. Accidentals As you heard in the video, accidentals are changes to regular or “natural” note names. A sharp looks like a hash tag #. A flat looks like a lower-case b. A Natural looks like this: Please find the sharps, flats, and naturals below. Flats move left, sharps move right,And naturals undo any flats or sharps.

7a. Grace Note A grace note is a little tiny note that asks you to play it really fast. When you Play the first two notes in the right hand, you play the first, then almost “flick” To the next note as quickly as you can.

7a. Now It’s Time to Learn the 2 Left Hand Chords! Understand EVERYTHING!

7 a. Jazz Intro Left Hand- Chord 1 Look at the first chord in the left hand. How many notes does it have? 4. Since they are vertically aligned, you are to play them all at once. They each last for 4 beats because the are what are called WHOLE NOTES. Notice where Middle C is located. That is your left hand thumb at middle C. Keeping your thumb on Middle C, what fingers work best for your hands? Remember? Middle C is the one with the little line through it. Still don’t understand? You are starting at Middle C with your left hand thumb. You are Playing a 4 note chord DFAC (C is the thumb) D, F, A, C

7 a. Jazz Intro Left Hand- Chord 2 Look at the arrow: the second chord in the left hand. Figure out how to play D, F, Ab, and B in the left hand. Remember our lesson on hand pain? Before you start the right hand, know these rules. Don’t move-on until you know these!1. Sharps or #’s mean that you play the note to the right regardless of its color.2. Flats or b’s, mean to play the key to the left regardless of its color.3. Once a note is sharpened or flattened in a measure, it stays sharpened or flattened unless it is undone by a natural sign. 7 b. Hints and Reminders

Use the correct fingers numbers and note names to play the right hand. Note Arrow: The first two notes are the G# and A above Middle C. Find the note, play it with the finger number in green. Go: For 10 minutes, log-in right away and practice for your Jazz Intro playing test for 10 points. LEARN: For 10 points, write the following words on a music slip: Jazz Intro, Verse A/B, Arpeggio, Bridge A/B, and 2C’s-2F’s. Then, give yourself a score on a 0-10 scale rating how well you believe you play each part of the song. During class, leave it out for me to see.
