02
Definition : Experimental exploratory, test, preliminary, trial or try out investigation.
Pilot study is the trial carried out before a research design is finalized to assist in defining the research question or to test the feasibility, reliability and validity of the proposed study design.
Pretesting is intended to reveal errors in the design.
Pretesting permits refinement before the final test.
A small scale study conducted to test the plan and method of research study.
Meaning and Concepts
Is a small study designed to gather information prior to a larger study, in order to improve the quality of final study.
Study can reveal deficiencies in the design of proposed research proposal.
A good research strategy requires careful planning & pilot study is often part of it.
Reasons for conducting a Pilot study
Main reasons :
Process: This assesses the feasibility of the process that are key to the success of the main study
Resources: This deals with assessing time and resources problems that can occur during the main study.
Management: This covers potential human and data management problems.
Scientific: This deals with the assessment of the response, effect and variance of the effect.
Other Reasons :
Developing and testing adequacy of research instrument.
Assessing the feasibility of a full scale / survey.
Developing a research question and research plan.
