Thank you Lord Jesus! We thank you for guiding our lives and pray that we may have the courage exemplified by Blessed Michael McGivney to live our faith to the fullest through our council, our families and in society.
Congratulation to all Council 10232 Faith in Action program directors. We have won recognition in all categories (Faith, Family, Community and Life) as either the Best Program activity or Runner Up program activity in the State of Alabama. Congratulation to Membership Director for achieving 140% in new membership. Special thanks to the Grand Knight, Deputy Grand Knight and Program Directors for streamlining the Council’s Faith in Action program. You can and review all the awards we received at the recent Alabama State Council Convention and the convention report on page 7 of this newsletter.
In addition to the awards we received at the State convention, we also have been informed about winning following Supreme awards: Supreme Columbian Award; Supreme recognition of John & Tana Mee (Family of the Month, March 2024), and, Larry & Eileen Burke (Family of the Month, December 2023). We also won a custom “join us” Blessed Michael McGivney pop-up banner for display at future council events. We won this for meeting the Founder’s Day Membership Recruitment Challenge.
We are awaiting results for the following Supreme awards: Founders Award (for meeting the requirements for Fraternal Benefits events (due June 30); McGivney Award (achieved 140 % Membership quota due June 30); and Star Council for FY 2023-24.
Congratulations to Sir Knight Stephen Moeller, the Council Recorder, for being selected as the Council’s Knight of the Month for April, and to Sir Knight Dan and Marge Bunke for their selection as the Council’s Family of the Month for April!
Brothers, you need to be very proud of what you have achieved. It is a complete sweep in all categories! I thank you again for all you do. This council has achieved all its set goals for the 2023-24 Fraternal Year. We are in Good Standing and fully compliant with all requirements set by the Supreme and by Alabama State.
Finally, Marinita and I wish your spouses who are mothers and your mothers a Happy Mother’s Day this month on May 12th!

slide3. A phrase often used in Scotland is say “Painting the Forth Bridge” to represent something that never stops.

Building of the Forth Rail Bridge started just 4 years before the founding of our Order in 1882, and the bridge was opened in 1890. It connected the villages of North and South Queensferry, named after the ferry crossing instituted by Saint Margaret, queen of Scotland, to allow pilgrims to cross the river Forth on their way to St Andrews around 1075AD.
So, like painting the Forth Bridge, our commitment to the success of the goals of the Knights of Columbus continues unabated. (UPDATE! They now use a special glass-based paint that lasts 25 years!)
During May, the month of the Holy Rosary, it is with real gratitude that I can report that the Brother Knights of the 3 Councils in District 20 are no strangers to the Marian prayer, each Council incorporating the Rosary in their monthly gatherings.

Our State Convention in April was a great success, with District 20 well represented by all its Councils and with significant successes in the receipt of State Deputy Awards. Our current Fraternal Year is coming to a close with the crossing of “T”s and dotting of “I”s represented in the Councils’ final submissions of the forms necessary for the Award of Star Council status.
Part of this process is the submission of forms relating to those who will be responsible for the continued growth of our Council and the development of Faith in Action through our members, so the process goes on as we begin planning for another successful year in our Councils, District, State and Order. slide4. Devotion of the Month In addition to the myriad feast days honoring Our Lady under her many titles and virtues, the entire month of May is especially given to her praise. In the words of Pope Paul VI, May is "a month which the piety of the faithful has long dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God ... For this is the month during which Christians, in their churches and their homes, offer the Virgin Mother more fervent and loving acts of homage and veneration; and it is the month in which a greater abundance of God's merciful gifts comes down to us from our Mother's throne."

- May 2024 - “Holy Father, keep them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one just as we are.” (Gospel for May 12, Jn 17:11b)

Jesus desires that his disciples be united in his name: one body, one faith, one church. It is vital for our own families to remain united in faith. It is not easy to raise and form children in the Catholic faith in today’s confused culture. But as Holy Cross Father Patrick Peyton, the “rosary priest,” said, “The family that prays together stays together.” Let us keep our family united by staying united to Christ in prayer.

Challenge by Supreme Chaplain Archbishop William E. Lori:
This month — the month of Mary — I challenge you to pray the rosary daily with your entire household, offering at least one decade for the unity of your family and the Church.

Questions for Reflection:
Do you pray regularly with your family beyond grace at meals or attending Mass? In what ways might praying together increase your family’s unity? What are some simple, specific ways you could practice family prayer in your home?

Council Recognition (Right) At Council 10232’s monthly Business meeting on April 4th, Grand Knight (GK) and Sir Knight (SK) Andy Haq presented Brother John Mee with a certificate recognizing John and his wife, Tana, as the Council’s Family of the Month for March, 2024. John actively supported the Lenten Fish Fries as a cook, server, and with kitchen cleanup. Council Recognition (Right) At the Council 10232’s monthly Business meeting on April 4th, Grand Knight (GK) and Sir Knight (SK) Andy Haq presented SK Bill Edwards with his Honorary Life Membership card, which is awarded to Brothers who have been members of the Knights of Columbus for 25 years and have reached the age of 70. State Life Program Activity Award – Council 10232 Volume 3, Issue 11, May 2024 The Alabama State Council conducted its annual convention April 19-21 in Atmore, AL at the Wind Creek Hotel, Convention Center & Casino. Approximately 160 Brother Knights and spouses from across the State attended the 3-day event that included: the Opening Mass, Opening State Dinner, State Caucus, and Cornhole Tournament on Friday; Breakfast with the Bishops, Business Meeting, Bowling Tournament, and Awards Banquet on Saturday; and, Closing Mass and 4th Degree Biennial Meeting on Sunday morning.
Distinguished Guests who addressed all attendees included: Bishop Thomas Rodi, Archbishop of Mobile; Bishop Steven Raica, Bishop of Birmingham; Bishop Emeritus Robert Baker; and, Arizona Past State Deputy Sean Halpain, Member, Supreme Council Board of Directors. Council 10232 attendees to the convention included: District 20 Deputy SK Joe Duffy and his wife, Mary; Grand Knight (SK) Andy Haq and his wife, Marinita; Deputy Grand Knight SK Craig Priebe; Past Grand Knight and Financial Secretary SK Joe McCarty and his wife, Kathleen; Chancellor SK Carlos Fernandez and his wife, Rita; and, SK Steven Broussard, Assembly 2420 Faithful Navigator. Additionally, Brother Brian Mitchell, his wife, Kathleen, and son, Eli, attended the Awards Banquet on Saturday evening.
The two main highlights of the convention were the election of the new State Deputy as our Brother, SK Danny Garcia, completes his 2-year term at the end of this Fraternal Year, and the State Awards Banquet. SK Bill Mores from Tuscaloosa was elected as the new State Deputy. We congratulate SK Danny Garcia on his successful 2-year term and pledge our support to SK Mores. - Calling All Golfers! - 11 Council 10232 Golf Group
April saw plenty of golf action by the Council 10232 Golf Group including one tournament, 16 golf outings, and three rounds of Top Golf range play. To start off, a team of three Knights (SK Ed Arominski, SK Daniel Bunke and Brother Tim Albers) represented Council 10232 at the Holy Spirit Golf Tournament. The team finished 3rd place…from the last, out-playing two other teams in a field of 20 teams.
Other golf action in April saw Top Golf range play hosted by James Cook. Outstanding players at Top Golf were awarded solid, gold-colored trophies and recognition certificates for exceptional play. Top Golf awards were presented by District Deputy Joe Duffy to SK Joey Cook for Most Improved Golfer, SK James Cook for High Score, SK Joe Duffy himself for Best Golf Swing, and Brother Tim Albers for Longest Drive. In addition, SK Cris Pate was recognized for successfully completing Council 10232 Stage 1 Golf Training. Chris followed up this feat by completing Council 10232 Golf Stage 2 Training in April at the local Sunset Landings Golf Course. Training included 18 holes of golf where Chris shot an outstanding 18-hole best ball scramble play score of 78.
Upcoming events for our golf group are the Fr. Louis Giardino Falcon Classic Golf Tournament to be held on May 13th at the Huntsville Country Club. SK Moeller has selflessly served as the Council Recorder, producing comprehensive meeting notes for the Council’s Business and Fraternal COR meetings. He also has served in Assembly Honor Guard duties. Well done, Stephen! Council 10232 recognizes SK Dan Bunke and his wife, Marge, as the Family of the Month for April. Dan has helped out behind the scenes (e.g., during our Fish Fries, helping SK Joe Duffy with painting the second story window frame & panels, providing some golf instruction to Brother Knights) Marge is an active participant in the Ladies Auxiliary. This month’s Rosary recitation took place on Thursday, April 18th, during the Council’s Fraternal Meeting. A total of 35 Sir Knights (SKs) and Brother Knights took part in the recitation of the Glorious Mysteries as we continue to celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ during this Easter season, led by Council Faith Program Director SK Em Bataille. slide15. 15 Faith in Action Programs – Community April 18 – Tree limb Clean-up at St. John’s
Early in the week of April 14th, maintenance personnel from St. John’s trimmed many of the trees and shrubs along the exit driveway from St. John’s. Father Bryan requested the assistance of Council 10232 to clean up the trimmed tree limbs and shrubs and take them to the landfill/dump in Huntsville. On Thursday morning, April 18th, four Council Brothers responded to the call for assistance. SKs Carlos Fernandez, Andy Haq, Craig Priebe, and Dan Ward began by loading the trimmings into the back of Dan’s pick-up. Following the first trip to the dump, it rapidly became evident that more equipment would be needed in order to complete the task in one day. SKs Ward and Haq rented a U-Haul flatbed trailer while SKs Fernandez and Priebe began cutting the trimmed branches and shrubs into smaller pieces for better loading into the bed of the pick-up and trailer. The task took several hours and four trips to the landfill to complete, but they got it done. In all, they cleaned up over one ton in weight of branch and shrub waste, resulting in an improved, clean exit driveway from St. John’s. slide16. Faith in Action Programs – Community 16 April 20 – SK John Horch Memorial Bi-Monthly Blood Drive
Council 10232 conducted its bi-monthly SK John Horch Memoria blood drive in the Basement Hall of St. John’s on Saturday, April 20th. The blood drive netted a total collection of 29 blood products, missing the Red Cross goal of 36 units. Blood Drive Co-Chairman SK Larry Burke led the team of SKs Jonathan Jumper, Chris Pate, James Cook, and Joey Cook to help conduct the Blood Drive. SKs Burke and Jumper arrived at 7:30 AM to set up the Hall for the Blood Drive collection team from the American Red Cross. SKs Burke, Pate and the Cook brothers then worked the registration table for the Drive that took place from 9:00 AM until 2:00 PM. SKs Burke and Jumper then recovered the Hall to its standard configuration following the completion of the Drive. Thanks to these Brothers for assisting in the conduct of the Drive and to the following eight Brother Knights who donated blood during the Drive: SKs Larry Burke, David Fledderman, Jonathan Jumper, and John Stipak; Brothers Daniel Coltey, Mark Dallas, Charles Kummer, and Lawrence Carlton (from Holy Spirit). slide17. Faith in Action Programs – Community 17 April 23 – St. John Paul II HS Parent/New Student Orientation Dinner Support
St. John Paul II High School requested Council support for the orientation they gave to incoming Freshman and their parents for the 2024-25 school year on Tuesday, April 23rd. Seven Council Brothers responded to the call for assistance. Led by the Council’s Liaison to JP II, SK Ed Arominski and the Council’s Hot Dog “Grill-master Par Excellence” SK Carlos Fernandez, Brothers served up a light dinner of grilled hot dogs, chips, cookies, and water to approximately 200 new students, parents, and High School staff & current student guides. All attendees expressed their appreciation to the Brothers who supported this event. Besides SKs Arominski and Fernandez, SKs Em Bataille, Larry Burke, Mike Dauphinais, Craig Priebe, and Brother Tom O’Donnell helped out. Three Knights and five other Christians participated in the monthly Pray for Life Rally on Saturday, April 13th, in front of the closed Huntsville Abortion Clinic on Sparkman Drive. slide19. Ladies’ Auxiliary Monthly Message 19 After a successful Fish Fry, the Auxiliary decided which causes they would support with the monies collected through donations made at our dessert table. We decided that we would donate to the following causes:
- Stackable high chairs for parish hall
- St John's School – For security.
- Athens Women's Resource Center
- Benedictine Sisters-Cullman
- KofC Ultrasound Program
- Baby Box Program
- St Vincent de Paul
- Cenacolo to buy personal goods
The ladies worked the JP II football concession stand last Fall and the proceeds went to the Bishop's Fund to aid Seminarians of our Diocese. A Scottish gift basket was taken to the convention at Atmore also to be raffled for the Bishop’s Fund. Thank you Ladies for all your time and effort making it possible to donate to all these causes.
At the convention, the $500 Pink Ticket Raffle was won by one of our Knights, Matt Kokkeler. The Ladies Auxiliary $750 Scholarship was also won by a St. John’s parishioner, Marissa Parkes. Congratulations to them both!
I would like to invite all members to pray for peace in the world, especially in the Holy Land and Ukraine.
