slide2. Stay safe
Whether you are a scientist researching a new medicine or an engineer solving climate change, safety always comes first. An adult must always be around and supervising when doing this activity. You are responsible for:
ensuring that any equipment used for this activity is in good working condition
behaving sensibly and following any safety instructions so as not to hurt or injure yourself or others
Please note that in the absence of any negligence or other breach of duty by us, this activity is carried out at your own risk. It is important to take extra care at the stages marked with this symbol: ⚠
slide3. Mechanical advantage (MA) Mechanical advantage is the ability of system to move a load force with a smaller effort force.
It is presented as a number with no units.
Mechanical advantage can be calculated:
MA = Load force (Fb) / Effort force (Fa)
In a pulley system the load is the weight of the object being lifted.
The effort is the pulling force that is needed to lift the load.
The effort and load forces are measured in newtons (N).
slide4. Example 1 A pulley system is capable of lifting a load of 20 N with a pulling force of 10 N. Calculate the MA of the system.
Answer:
MA = Fb / Fa
MA = 20 / 10
MA = 2 The effort force is therefore half of the load force.
slide5. Example 2 A pulley system is designed to lift a 6 kg mass with an effort force of 20 N. Calculate the MA.
Answer:
Load = 6 kg x 10 = 60 N
MA = Fb / Fa
MA = 60 / 20
MA = 3 The effort force is therefore one third of the load force.
slide6. Testing pulleys and calculating their MA Pulley Load Effort 1) 2) 3) Test your systems with the weights provided.
Calculate the mechanical advantage of each system.
slide7. Record of testing and calculations
slide8. Extension Design a pulley system capable of providing a mechanical advantage of at least 4.
