slide6. Power on the PurpleAir Sensor Page 6 We will setup and register the sensor while indoors near a computer/device on a WiFi network
Connect the power cord to the microUSB port at the bottom of the sensor. Connect the cord to an available power outlet. A dim red LED will be lit on the underside of the housing when the sensor is powered.
If desired, install a microSD card into the card slot directly opposite of the power port. The card will be a helpful data backup and is necessary for offline operation. Step 1 MicroUSB port MicroSD card Note: If not connected to WiFi, data will be stored on the local microSD card only. However, for this sensor loan program, all PurpleAir Sensors should be connected to WiFi and set as public unless explicitly stated otherwise by EPA staff.<br>
slide7. Find the PurpleAir Sensor’s Network Page 7 Make note of the sensor’s device ID which is noted on the sticker on the side of the sensor
On a WiFi-enabled device (computer, tablet, or smartphone), open the list of available WiFi networks
Note: This will require temporary disconnection of your device from its usual network
Connect to the sensor's network, which is likely called “PurpleAir-****” where **** is the last 2-4 characters of the device ID
Note: It may take up to up to 10 minutes after the sensor is plugged in for this network to appear Step 1<br>
slide8. Access the PurpleAir sensor’sConfiguration Page Page 8 When connecting to the sensor’s network, several things may happen:
You may get a pop-up window or a message to sign-in to the network. If so, press it to make the pop-up window appear. The pop-up window will list all available WiFi networks.
If the pop-up window does not appear, try opening a web browser and loading a webpage. If you are indeed connected to the PurpleAir network, this will load the sensor interface with the WiFi settings for the sensor.
If this does not happen, open a webpage and in the address bar, enter the default IP address for the sensor: http://192.168.4.1/config Step 1<br>
slide9. Connect the PurpleAir Sensor to Your Network Page 9 In the pop-up window, click on the “Wi-Fi Settings” page to see the available networks
Select the WiFi network you want to connect the sensor to from the list
Enter the network password and then click save. Your sensor will reboot to configure the settings
Note: The last option on this list allows for the use of a hidden network Step 1<br>
slide10. Verify the WiFi Connection Page 10 Within a minute or so, the connection should be a success and the status bar will turn green and say “WiFi Connected”
If it was successful, the “PurpleAir-****” network should no longer be visible
You can start the device registration process using the link provided
Note: You will need to reconnect your device (laptop, tablet, smartphone) to its usual network Step 1<br>

Enter the Associated Email supplied by the loan organization (sensor purchaser)
For our Sensor Loan Program, this is: Richardson.Joey@epa.gov OR if that does not work, try Wallace.Will@epa.gov
Choose where the sensor will be installed
Note: Only outdoor sensors will be viewable on the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map. Outdoor is the option we are using for this Sensor Loan Program unless explicitly stated otherwise by EPA staff.
Enter a Location Name which is how the sensor will be labeled on the PurpleAir map. Names should be unique
Choose whether the data should be publicly viewable or not. For this Sensor Loan Program, please set to Public.
Set the Map Location by entering GPS coordinates or by dragging the marker on the map. Please try to be as accurate as possible.<br>

Notes:
Check the spam folders for emails
Public data should now be available on the PurpleAir map

Note: When powered back on, the sensor will automatically reconnect to the same WiFi network provided it is within range
The sensor must be installed vertically with the dome at the top so that the inlet and power port will be protected from water and debris accumulation.<br>

slide18. Page 18 Step 3 Sensor Mounting After determining the optimal placement, secure the sensor using the metal bracket. You can use a screw through the hole or a zip tie depending on your needs
Connect the power cord to the sensor and then to a GFCI power outlet
Protects all electrical connections from water intrusion and from being covered by snow (e.g. outlet cover, weather-proof power cord connection box)
Tuck the cord away to ensure it does not become a tripping hazard
Use a "drip loop" to prevent water from running down the power cord and into the outlet Drip Loop<br>
slide19. Page 19 Step 3 Documenting the Installation Photos of the sensor deployment may assist you with data interpretation later and should include features that may impact the sensor readings
Outdoors: buildings, roadways, landscapes, typical use of the space
Indoors: windows, doors, exhaust vents, typical use of the room Additional notes can be helpful too, such as:
The location, height, and date of installation
Any temporary activities (e.g., road work, construction activities, cleaning, cooking) that may have been occuring during installation<br>

slide22. Troubleshooting Tips – Setup and Registration Page 22 Setup may be easiest when the WiFi connection is configured while the sensor is indoors, near your computer, where you have a good WiFi signal
Rarely, the sensor ID on the sensor may be incorrect. The correct ID can be found within the data file on the SD card.
Registration requires the email address associated with the sensor purchase. If this is unknown, contact the loan organization for further instructions
To change the registration information
If making minor changes, you can simply repeat the registration process with the current/updated information and the original information will be replaced
If you plan to move the sensor to another location, contact PurpleAir so that the data from the old location can be archived so that the data stays at the original location. You will then be able to re-register it in the new location as a new sensor<br>

PurpleAir sensors only support 2.4Ghz WiFi networks
Connecting to a captive portal networks, such as those used by coffee shops, universities, etc. will need special authorization from the network administrator
WPA2-Enterprise network connections are not supported at this time
WPA and WPA2-PSK (Pre-Shared Key) networks are supported
Testing Network Strength
To ensure you have a reasonable WiFi signal where you intend to mount the sensor, try browsing the internet using WiFi with a phone or computer near the intended location<br>

Make sure the sensor has power. Perform a power cycle (unplug, wait 10 sec, plug-in)
Make sure the sensor has a WiFi connection. Try re-configuring the connection
Ensure the registration form has been filled out. Try completing the registration form again
Note: If the marker has disappeared from the map, it is possible that your sensor may have become inactive for an extended amount of time
Sensor marker is grey on the PurpleAir map
Note: This generally means the sensor has recently become inactive
Perform the troubleshooting steps outlined above
Ensure you have completed the registration form. Look for the coordinates you entered in the registration confirmation email to be sure they are accurate<br>
slide25. Troubleshooting Tips – Sensor Missing From the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map Page 25 Sensor marker is not appearing on the AirNow Fire and Smoke map
Note: It may take up to 48 hours for a new sensor to show up on the Fire and Smoke Map
Ensure the sensor has power, is connected to WiFi, and that the sensor is reporting data to the PurpleAir map
Check the registration to be sure the sensor is marked as “outdoor”
Click on the sensor on the PurpleAir map to view a time series of data from channels A and B. Sensors may be failing quality control checks if
Sensors don’t have sufficient data completeness because of intermittently reporting data
Data reported by the A and B channels do not match well
Click on another nearby sensor on the PurpleAir map to add that data to the time series graph
If the trends of the two sensors do not match well, the sensor may have been flagged by EPA or the local air quality agency as suspect or impacted by a local pollution source (This is rare)<br>

Check the registration to be sure the sensor is marked as “outdoor”
Click on the sensor on the PurpleAir map to view a time series of data from channels A and B. Sensors may be failing quality control checks if
Sensors don’t have sufficient data completeness because of intermittently reporting data
Data reported by the A and B channels do not match well
Click on another nearby sensor on the PurpleAir map to add that data to the time series graph
If the trends of the two sensors do not match well, the sensor may have been flagged by EPA or the local air quality agency as suspect or impacted by a local pollution source (This is rare)<br>
