Results of FIRST Survey Characteristics of Respondents 32 Respondants Number grants in last year: Between 1 and 965 (average = 114) Dollars awarded in last year: Between $130,000 to $371,000,000 (average = $35M) 2 Of those who don’t, reasons include: “the foundations we represent do not ask for it” “Our grants to date have been focused on basic disease mechanisms and have not involved IP development” “Concerns over researchers inability to apply if instiution will not accept an agreement” “We are a private foundation, not a fund raising organization” “Private Foundation well endowed” “We don't have the staffing to carry this out. We ask our grantees to let us know any discoveries resulting from our funding and to acknowledge our funding but we do not ask for IP ownership or licensing.” Several others said they are considering, but trying to figure out how to manage Does your organization include IP in its award provisions? 3 Comments: “We will make corrections to institution name if name used in the contract is different from name commonly used, additional time for financial reporting etc.” “It is the exception, not the rule. Changes are very minor and usually relate to timing of award start date.” “Case-by-case - institutions can request changes to any clause, subject to review and approval by our legal team” “It depends and requests for negotiation are considered on a case by case basis” “The grantee institutions are free to comment on any of the terms and then we go through their comments and determine which ones can be negotiated/not negotiated.
