Safety Management System Espedito Rusciano 20/10/2022 VMAD SG3 VMAD-SG3-23-03 Introduction The Safety Management System is a systematic, proactive and integrated approach - including the necessary organizational structures, accountabilities, policies, and procedures - for the management of safety in order to promote a strong safety culture and achieve good safety performance It is expected that any manufacturer has in place robust processes/strategies to ensure that the system meets the relevant safety requirements throughout the vehicle lifecycle. 3 Critical Factors Mature organizations recognize that an efficient control of risk can only be achieved through a process that brings together three critical dimensions: a technical component with the used tools and equipment, a human component of front-line people with their skills, training and motivation an organizational component consisting of procedures and methods defining the relationship of tasks Evolution of the Safety Thinking Timeline Level of Safety Safety Management System – Main Components Ref: https://www.nhvr.gov.au/safety-accreditation-compliance/safety-management-systems Implementing all relevant components of the SMS will provide an organization with the necessary confidence that it controls and will continue to control all the risks associated with its activities, under all conditions. SMS Framework in VMAD The VMAD framework ensures that the 4 main components of the Safety Management system are embodied during the whole Vehicle Life cycle SG3 Roadmap for SMS To provide the updated version by the end of October To send comments by 15 November SG3 Leaders SG3 Members To provide the/Checklist by end of November To send comments by 9 December Thanks For Attention Safety Policy - The foundation Safety Policy component of the SMS must translate the commitment of the organization towards safety by establishing an adequate organizational structures and setting up dedicated procedures to accomplish safety goals. Risk Management – The achievement of Safety Risk management is fundamental SMS component for controlling risk to acceptable levels. Risk management must identify hazard from design, procedures and operating practices, personnel factors, organizational factors, human performance, etc Safety Promotion – The continuous improvement The organization must continuously promote safety as a core value with practices that support a sound safety culture Safety Assurance – The continuous compliance The organization must have the ability to be in control of the safety performance in order to assure that the SMS is effective
