slide7. Many Churches are Stuck Most churches are simply not reaching and baptizing many new members.
Most small groups are focused on care, and become inward and self-centered
Or they are focused on Bible study, and become primarily information download with little application.
People are not being discipled or mobilized.
Many churches have given up on small groups.<br>
slide8. The Real Problem Most churches and most small groups are pastoral, not apostolic:
Pastoral focus is caring and keeping.
This creates a “meet my needs” mentality
Apostolic focus is training and sending.
The foundation is apostles and prophets, not pastors and teachers. Eph 2:20
Priesthood of all believers not implemented.
Most believers are not mobilized in service, not using their gifts.
The members of the body are not healthy, not functioning as they should.<br>
slide9. The Big Idea Lecturing is good for information download but not so effective for transformation.
Apprenticeship vs classroom lecturing.
Jesus had a small group; he made disciples primarily by spending time, training them.
Paul spent time developing Timothy, other church leaders. 2 Tim 2:2
Need to develop, not just delegate.
Need to do apprenticeship in addition to preaching and teaching and Bible study.<br>
slide10. Foundational Concepts See our Breaking the 70 Barrier Workshop for more on the following concepts of
Doing Church as Family
Development and Destiny
Leadership Development<br>
slide11. Doing Church as a Family Three Types of Churches: Fantasy, Factory, Family.
Pastors: Family is a “safe place.” Yes, for babies! But need to become…
Family is the Kingdom Model; Model of the Trinity. Eph. 3:14-15
Reproduction and Development
God to Adam: “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth…subdue it…” Gen. 1:28
Jesus to his spiritual family: “Go and make disciples …” Matt. 28:19-20
Spiritual reproduction: Jesus -> disciples. Paul -> Timothy and Titus
Need to do DEVELOPMENT, not just delegation. Win - Win
5 elements: Identity, Community, Maturity, Responsibility, Destiny
KEY: Sun is Tribe. Small groups are Family: Ideal for community…AND individual and leadership development, outreach, accountability & service<br>
slide12. Destiny and Development Destiny: an individual’s mission, calling, ministry, purpose, or dream.
We are designed for destiny: Ps 139 Created for good works: Eph 2:10
Our gifts and passions point towards our destiny.
Each believer will be accountable for what they have done. 2 Cor. 5:10
Problem: How to develop people: need to customize for each individual.
Every church needs to be a destiny incubator.
Reward-based motivation is the primary way God works (70% of promises). Heb 11:6
Shift from duty-driven to delight-directed discipleship.
People will be most fulfilled AND most productive when fulfilling their calling.
Bring personal destiny and organizational destiny together: win-win.
KEY: Develop each individual for destiny; use the DestinyFinder.com tool.<br>
slide13. Development Meeting How to spend a very productive one hour development meeting
20 min Relational: Casual, friendly
How was your family outing last week? Did you catch the football game? etc
20 min Personal Development: Character, accountability, personal destiny
Last time you shared about ___ issue. I recommended you read __ book and do some prayer and fasting. How did that go?
I noticed when you were leading the group last week that you and Bill were kind of intense with each other. Help me understand what was going on there.
Pull out your Destiny Finder binder. Tell me about your dream and let’s look at how to help you get there.
20 min. Ministry Development: Mentoring and troubleshooting about the ministry they lead or serve in
How’s it going with the small group you lead?
How are you doing developing an assistant leader in your team?
KEY: Develop each individual for destiny; use the DestinyFinder.com tool. Help them create a “life map.”<br>
slide14. Developing Leaders Family is the Model
Family exists for the benefit of the next generation.
Spiritual reproduction. Make disciples who make more disciples
Leaders are the “bones” of the body.
Healthy leaders are the number one factor to produce a healthy church.
Small groups are ideal for developing leaders:
Great first step, and great preparation for greater levels of service
Easy to do on-the-job training
Leading a group provides a wide range of experience
See Breaking the 70 Barrier Workshop for more on leadership development<br>
slide15. Worker Leader Definitions Breaking 70 requires developing leaders
You must multiply yourself through other leaders.
Helper: Helps spontaneously, no job description (set up chairs, etc.)
Worker: Defined job description (on a team, serves regularly)
Assistant Leader: Leads in presence of their leader (group assistant leader)
Leader: Leads in absence of their leader (group or team leader)
Overseer: Leader of leaders (LOL), also called Elders; volunteer position
Staff Pastor: Leads overseers, paid position (associate pastor, etc)
KEY: Develop your leaders so they can develop others.
Key: Learn to say no. You have priorities. You can pastor 60 or lead 60 leaders and pastor 600…<br>
slide16. Leader Qualification Each level of leader has a different qualification – the 5 H’s
Health: Physical, spiritual, emotional, financial, social, etc.
Head: Knowledge; Biblical and otherwise
Heart: Character; fruit of the Spirit
Hands: Skills: ministry and otherwise
Holy Spirit: Vibrant experience of God, prayer life, Holy Spirit
KEY: A small group leader doesn’t need to be a seminary graduate. Almost anyone can lead a small group IF they have proper training and ONGOING support.<br>
slide17. Small Groups<br>
slide18. Jesus Had a Small Group Jesus’ primary means of developing disciples was a small group
He preached and taught to thousands.
He healed and cast out demons from hundreds.
He interacted with various individuals on a daily basis.
BUT he spent the bulk of his time for three years with the 12 apostles
He used the apprenticeship model (showed them, then helped them do it , then let them do it on their own.)
Sometimes he would just thrust them into ministry and explain later.
He did “life on life” with them.
KEY: He focused on 12 and especially on 3 and they became the foundation for the church once he ascended.<br>
slide19. The New Church The church right after Pentecost met in the Temple and house to house
“43 Everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many wonders and signs were taking place through the apostles.
44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
45 and they began selling their property and possessions and were sharing them with all, as anyone might have need.
46 Day by day continuing with one mind in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they were taking their meals together with gladness and sincerity of heart,
47 praising God and having favor with all the people.” Acts 2:43-47<br>
slide20. Paul The church has two “wings” publically and house to house
“…how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house,” Acts 20:20
Publically: Large celebration meeting (Sunday); great for teaching, worship, vision. It’s your “tribe.”
House to House: Small groups; great for connection, care, AND personal and leadership development.
The key is to make the small groups apostolic (train and send)
Leaders need to lead great meetings AND do people development by personal meetings, and raise up new leaders.
I Cor 12 and 14 Paul talks about ministering to each other in a group
KEY: Small groups are destiny incubators to develop people.<br>
slide21. The One Another Verses 1 There are 47 “one another” verses in the NT for believers
Unity: One third deal with the unity of the church.

Don’t complain against one another (Jas 4:11, 5:9)
Confess sins to one another (Jas 5:16)<br>
slide22. The One Another Verses 2 Love: One third of them instruct Christians to love one another.
Love one another (Jn 13:34, 15:12, 17; Rom 13:8; 1 Thes 3:12, 4:9; 1 Pet 1:22; 1 Jn 3:11, 4:7, 11; 2 Jn 5)
Through love, serve one another (Gal 5:13)
Tolerate one another in love (Eph 4:2)
Greet one another with a kiss of love (1 Pet 5:14)
Be devoted to one another in love (Rom 12:10)<br>
slide23. The One Another Verses 3 Humility: About 15% stress an attitude of humility and deference among believers.
Give preference to one another in honor (Rom 12:10)
Regard one another as more important than yourselves (Php 2:3)
Serve one another (Gal 5:13)
Wash one another’s feet (Jn 13:14)
Don’t be haughty: be of the same mind (Rom 12:16)
Be subject to one another (Eph 5:21)
Clothe yourselves in humility toward one another (1 Pet 5:5)<br>
slide24. The One Another Verses 4 Here’s the rest:
Do not judge one another, and don’t put a stumbling block in a brother’s way (Ro 14:13)
Greet one another with a kiss (Rom 16:16; 1 Co 16:20; 2 Co 13:12)
Husbands and wives: don’t deprive one another of physical intimacy (1 Co 7:5)
Bear one another’s burdens (Gal 6:2)
Speak truth to one another (Eph 4:25)
Don’t lie to one another (Col 3:9)
Comfort one another concerning the resurrection (1 Thes 4:18)
Encourage and build up one another (1 Thes 5:11)
Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (Heb 10:24)
Pray for one another (Jas 5:16)
Be hospitable to one another (1 Pet 4:9)
From the Overview Bible https://overviewbible.com/one-another-infographic/<br>
slide25. Small Group Team Team of five people representing the five ministry gifts of Eph 4:7-16
Ministry is distributed
Apostolic (Small group leader)
Prophetic (Worship leader, and prayer)
Evangelistic (Outreach worker)
Pastoral (Host, and pastoral care)
Teaching (Growth coach - discipling)
KEY: Focus on function and fruit, not position and title
KEY: The main goal is equipping others – Eph. 4:12<br>
slide26. Small Group Leader Apostolic/Builder - Providing apostolic leadership and oversight

Reproduction - developing new worship leaders.
Assist and support Small Group Leader.
Lead worship and help direct ministry times and prayer.
Help facilitate spiritual gift development in the group
Periodic teaching and celebration coordination

Reproduction - developing new Harvest workers.
Assist and support Small Group Leader.
Support each individual in personal evangelism.
Coordinate periodic outreach events.
Teach and lead prayer time for friends and neighbors.

Assist and support Small Group Leader.
Oversight of Small Group home environment - host the meeting.
Hospitality –welcome and follow-up of new people.

Assist and support Small Group Leader.
Teach material as needed.
Help new-transfer members catch up with the group.
Help new believers understand the biblical basics.
Help to disciple all members as needed.
Sits with new people that show up.<br>
slide31. Team Health Team health consists of providing five things:
Vision: Where are we going? Why are we doing this?
Goals: How will we accomplish the vision? Use SMART goals.
Support: What does each person need to do their job?
Reward: What does each person get out of serving?
Feedback: How well is each person doing their job and how can they improve?
KEY: Most leaders are good at vision and goals. Most teams need more support, reward and feedback<br>
slide32. Team Support If you are leading a small group
You should meet with your team as a group once every 1-3 weeks for training, vision, support, etc.
You should meet with your leader once every 2-4 weeks; that should be a developmental meeting (see previous slide)
There should be some kind of periodic meeting for small group leaders and workers for training, vision, support and reward – every 3-4 months
Schedule some fun time: bowling, parties, picnics, and recognition nights
KEY: Lots of hands-on ministry and interaction. Jesus spent 24/7 with his small group. We have to get as much quality time with our group and especially our team as possible<br>
slide33. Group Life Cycle It takes TIME to develop people, especially if they have no previous ministry experience or are new believers. Can’t develop people in 6-8 weeks.
We suggest the groups multiply every year.
Months 1-3: The group goes through the Destiny Finder Small Group program. It’s ideal for getting the group focused on discovering their gifts and calling and serving God –mobilizing every member for ministry.
Months 4-9 The group can use almost any curriculum as long as the focus remains on interaction and development. This means that it doesn’t turn into a Bible study – people are able to spend significant time sharing with each other, not just listening to someone teach.
Ongoing: The team is meeting with people individually to develop them, working on their destiny and mobilizing them for service.<br>
slide34. Group Development & Multiplication If the groups go for 6-9 months, there will usually be a natural break for summer or winter. In the US, it works well to follow the Sep-June school year.
Months 1-3 The group does Destiny Finder, group gets to know each other.
Months 3-4 The five members of the team recruit and begin training assistants
Months 4-9 The assistants are apprenticed / trained on-the-job, and toward the end of that time the assistants are able to take over and do fulfill the role themselves.
Months 10-12 Break
Next year: The new team is able to launch a new group. Or team members can be matched up with more experienced leaders to form the new teams.<br>
slide35. Launching New Groups Small groups should be given priority over everything else.
Reschedule or change other meetings that “compete” with weekly small groups.
Have the teams do personal recruiting for a month or two before launch.
Do a small group “fair” a few weeks before the launch date. Have the teams be at tables in the lobby, end the service 15 min early and announce the fair. Teams have snacks or give aways, flyers, etc.
Promote through every communication channel
The senior leader and overseers should visibly support small groups.<br>
slide36. Two Hour Format It’s important to start and stop on time
20 min Intro and Worship
20 min Teaching; live or video
15 min Personal self study (depends on topic or curriculum)
20 min Mini-groups of 3-4 discuss
15 min Mini-groups pray for each other
10 min Outreach worker shares something
10 min Other ministry
10 min Group prayer or activity
KEY: at least 20 min of sharing with mini-groups of 3 or 4; no more!<br>
slide37. 90 Minute Format Structures can be modified; don’t be a slave to the structure
20 min Intro and Worship
20 min Teaching; live or video
20 min Mini-groups of 3-4 discuss
15 min Mini-groups pray for each other
10 min Outreach worker shares something

slide39. Evangelism Intro Everything can happen better in heaven except…Evangelism!
Reaching the lost is our main priority. The Great Commission Matt 28:19-20
Jesus had an agenda. To seek and to save that which was lost. Luke 19:10
The gospel is the good news, the message of salvation and the Kingdom.
Every Christian needs to share the gospel.
Every Christian needs to be trained in personal soul winning even if evangelism is not their “gift.”
Most Christians think of “real evangelism” as street preaching; need to shift the understanding that evangelism is much more than that.<br>
slide40. Relational Evangelism Relational or lifestyle evangelism is the key to babies in the house!
Most people come to faith through friendship relationship with a Christian.
Many believers have little or no meaningful friendships with non-Christians.
Must build trust for people to be open to change beliefs, Spirit, gospel.
Small groups are the “platform” for outreach, but not primarily to invite people to the regular group meeting.
Members of the group need to reach out to their Sphere of Influence (SOI) and develop friendships.
SOI are the people you have regular contact with: family, friends, co-workers, activity group members, neighbors, family of friends.<br>
slide41. Small Group Outreach Fun, casual events
Group does “bridge” events: fun, casual relational events that group members can invite non-Christian friends to, to increase connection with Christians.
Invite some Christians from the group, some non-Christians.
Keep it casual and relational, with food and drink.
Examples: parties, barbeques, service projects, dinners, sports events gatherings such as Super Bowl or World Cup<br>
slide42. Evangelism Training in Groups Evangelistically gifted leaders must train and encourage (Eph 4:11-12)
Testimonies are powerful: have people share in the group often
Small group outreach worker keeps small group focused outward by bringing evangelistic focus to meetings. Example: 5 min talk, testimony or activity such as writing names of people in SOI who are open and praying for them.
Small group training by outreach worker: train members on personal evangelism: how to share testimony, lead person to faith, basic apologetics, follow up. Use Role play.<br>
slide43. Q & A<br>

Paul Berteig, pastor of Genesis Community Church in Prince George Canada: https://pastorscoach.com/video/boot-camp-testimony-paul-berteig/
“20 years in ministry, seven as a Senior Pastor… But I have NEVER come across anything like Pastor’s Coach. I’m only one month into their 2 year Q2Q Church Growth Track, but I am fast becoming convinced that this is THE BEST MATERIAL and MOST EXTRAORDINARY COACHING that I have EVER come across. Do yourself a favour - connect with Pastors Coach - it’ll be one of the best and most defining decisions of your ministry.“ -- Luke Harris, Senior Pastor, Empower Church - The Shire, Cronulla, Australia.<br>
slide56. More Testimonies There is nothing else quite like this available anywhere!
“Glen, I want to express my huge appreciation to you and Michael for the Pastor’s Coach program. I want to let you know that I get it. It’s not a program. It’s a total paradigm shift for ministry, out of traditionalism and into the leadership model and church building strategy that Jesus intended. I get the big picture. The moment I heard that Michael spent 20+ hours per week in face-to-face mentoring, my life was changed forever and there’s no going back. When I understood that personal leadership development and small group team ministry were higher priority than the weekend service, my life changed forever. No going back. Thank you both! -- Mike Harding, Senior Pastor, Love Gospel Church, Apache Junction, Arizona, USA
“…You guys are literally helping to shape us from the ground up..." -- Adam Mathias, Pastor, Kindle Church, Pontypridd, Wales, UK<br>

44 And all those who had believed were together and had all things in common;
KEY: Small groups are destiny incubators to develop people.<br>
slide21. The One Another Verses 1 There are 47 “one another” verses in the NT for believers

slide22. The One Another Verses 2 Love: One third of them instruct Christians to love one another.

Don’t lie to one another (Col 3:9)
Comfort one another concerning the resurrection (1 Thes 4:18)
Encourage and build up one another (1 Thes 5:11)
Stimulate one another to love and good deeds (Heb 10:24)
Pray for one another (Jas 5:16)
Be hospitable to one another (1 Pet 4:9)

slide25. Small Group Team Team of five people representing the five ministry gifts of Eph 4:7-16
Ministry is distributed
Apostolic (Small group leader)
Prophetic (Worship leader, and prayer)
Evangelistic (Outreach worker)
Pastoral (Host, and pastoral care)
