The slides answer: The purpose of the organization Year founded Member Countries Symbol North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Allows free trade among the United States, Canada, and Mexico and has helped with trade, created jobs, and encouraged the economic growth of its members. Founded: 1994 Member Countries: 3 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Founded: 1949 Member Countries: 28 A group of 28 countries that have agreed to protect each other in case of attack; they formed NATO to protect themselves against the Soviet Union and its communist allies. It is a military and defense agreement among the governments of member nations. United Nations (UN) Founded: 1945 Member Countries: 193 Created to keep peace around the world and develop friendly relationship among nations. 193 nations (governments) are members of the United Nations. US is part of this organization. European Union (EU) Founded: 1951 Member Countries: 27 Help European countries avoid conflict by making them dependent on each other. Create a single economy in which all members participate. Act as a single voice in the world for its member countries. Give aid to countries around the world. World Trade Organization (WTO) Founded: 1995 Member Countries: 164 The WTO was created to promote trade and economic growth by lowering taxes and removing limits on some types of trade. Countries may join and make agreements about trade and taxes. World Bank Founded: 1944 Member Countries: 187 Help poor and middle income countries get money to build improvements and reduce poverty. Improve living conditions in countries with moderate financial resources. Improve conditions in the poorest countries in the world. International Court of Justice (World Court) Founded: 1998 Member Countries: 123 The world court gives legal advice to the UN and deals with international issues, such as a disagreement about borders between countries. Countries may become members by meeting the requirements of the UN. Individuals may work or intern with the world court. World Health Organizations (WHO) Founded: 1948 Member Countries: 193 Is an organization within the United Nations that works to improve health around the entire world.
