Summer Food Service Program Lindsay Talbot Community Nutrition Supervisor January 16, 2024 Agenda Overview Purpose Benefits Program Impact Program Requirements Non-Congregate Meals in Rural Areas Current Barriers to Participation Overview The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) is a federally funded, state administered program. USDA reimburses program operators who serve free, healthy meals and snacks to children and teens that meet the federal program meal pattern. Purpose SFSP plays a critical role in providing food to children who would otherwise go hungry during the summer months. When school lets out, 310,761 children in Nevada lose access to the free and reduced school meals they receive during the regular school year. Benefits The SFSP: Offers healthy meals to children during the summer months Attracts children to educational programming Provides an important funding stream to summer enrichment programs Supports local economies by bringing federal dollars into the state Program Impact In the summer of 2023: 523 sites operated SFSP 1,290,088 SFSP meals were served Sponsors received $5,235,456.91 in reimbursement Program Requirements Sponsor Eligibility Site Eligibility Participant Eligibility Meal Service Non-Congregate Meals in Rural Areas From the December 2022 Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023: What constitutes a rural area?
