Valley Values Valley Life Skills We are powerful learners… Resilient Robbie Resourceful Rosie Reflective Rick Reciprocal Ruth A Typical Day in Year 5 8.40 – Self-registration and Early Morning activities 8.50 - Register and activate 9.00 – Class assembly or school assembly 9.20 – Grammar, Spelling or Handwriting session 9.30 - Power of Reading 9.45 – English session 10.45 - Snack and break 11.00 – Maths Key Skills session 11.15 – Maths lesson 12.20 – Lunch 13.05 – Every Child a Reader 13.15 – Register and activate 13.25 - Two Afternoon lessons - Geography, History, Science, PE, PSHE, Computing, Art, Design and Technology, Music, French, Guided Reading 15.30– Outside for home time A Typical Day in Year 5 On a Friday afternoon the children will have 1 session before leaving school at 2pm. There is a challenge for the children on Friday to complete two activities: Curious Challenge Brain booster activities Information about these can be found on the Year Group Pages on the website. English in Year 5 Each English lesson begins with the children having the opportunity to respond to any next steps and improve a sentence through up-levelling work. Power of Reading Each half term, we will study a text. Power of reading sessions involve reading our text and answer questions on our reading. Our books this year are: Cosmic Skellig The Journey Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom Rooftoppers Tom’s Midnight Garden English Skills Children read a section of the book and have time to discuss their understanding, answering questions based on prediction, vocabulary, inference, retrieval and summarizing. English in Year 5 Text types The children will write for a range of purposes this year including: Instructions Newspaper reports Formal and Informal Letters Non-chronological reports Persuasion Diary entries Adventure and Mystery narratives Writing skills Year 5 skills including: Correctly punctuated multi-clause sentences Relative clauses with correct relative pronouns Using varied, correctly punctuated sentence openers Using correct punctuation for direct speech Spellings Text types Children will bring home spelling lists that include words to learn for weekly Friday assessments and half termly Wizard words. Weekly spellings - Spellings linked
