A Typical Day in Year 5 On a Friday afternoon the children will have 1 session before leaving school at 2pm.

English in Year 5 Each English lesson begins with the children having the opportunity to respond to any next steps and improve a sentence through up-levelling work.
Power of Reading
Each half term, we will study a text. Power of reading sessions involve reading our text and answer questions on our reading. Our books this year are:

Skellig
The Journey
Boy in the Girl’s Bathroom
Rooftoppers
Tom’s Midnight Garden

English Skills
Children read a section of the book and have time to discuss their understanding, answering questions based on prediction, vocabulary, inference, retrieval and summarizing.<br>

English in Year 5 Text types
The children will write for a range of purposes this year including:
Instructions
Newspaper reports
Formal and Informal Letters
Non-chronological reports
Persuasion
Diary entries
Adventure and Mystery narratives

Writing skills
Year 5 skills including:
Correctly punctuated multi-clause sentences​
Relative clauses with correct relative pronouns
Using varied, correctly punctuated sentence openers
Using correct punctuation for direct speech<br>

Spellings Text types
Children will bring home spelling lists that include words to learn for weekly Friday assessments and half termly Wizard words.

Weekly spellings
- Spellings linked to a spelling rule.  
- Lists will include 10 words and the children will be tested on 5 of them on a Friday in a variety of ways.
- Teachers will assess if the children are applying new spellings in a variety of ways or are still working towards. 
- Children will no longer be given a score at the end of the test.

Wizard words
-These are the common exception words for each year group.
-Divided into half terms.
- The words will be talked about and used in school across the half term and should be learnt at home across the half term.
- All words will be tested at the end of each half term.<br>

Maths in Year 5 Key Skills
All Maths lessons start with 15 minutes of Key Skills sessions. 
These sessions focus on the areas of place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division and shape. 
They are designed to enable children to practice skills from the previous and current year and to build children’s confidence in applying the skills taught in lessons. 
Every Friday they have a KIRF session, which supplements the practice they are doing at home and enables them to develop the skill further.

Maths lessons follow the White Rose sequence of work
Key skills sessions are followed by an hour long Maths session which includes teaching of the new concept using resources, drawing representations of the questions and moving onto written methods. 
Children then have fluency questions, reasoning questions and problem solving questions.<br>

Other Curriculum Opportunities Healthy Schools
PE – in PE children will study gymnastics, dance, cricket, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities which includes team building exercises. 
As well as these sessions, we will use ‘Real PE’, an activity-based PE curriculum, to get the children active and enjoying physical exercise.
The children have 2 PE lessons a week – where possible this is one indoor session and one outdoor session.
Please ensure that any earrings are covered or removed on PE days. 
Please ensure that all items in your child’s PE kit are named and that PE kits are kept in a purple or black drawstring bag.<br>

Other Curriculum Opportunities PSHE & SMSC:

RE: We will be investigating different religions. We will focus mainly on understanding Christianity and Sikhism. 
PSHE: We use the jigsaw scheme to help us teach the children about responsibility, hopes and dreams, making healthy choices, getting on and falling out and growing-up.<br>

Other Curriculum Opportunities Personal Development:

Computing: In computing the children will have the opportunity to study coding, online safety, Microsoft PowerPoint, databases, concept maps and 3D modelling.
Music: the children will have the opportunity to study classic rock music, pop music and hip hop. Children will have the opportunity to play the guitar during their time in Year 5
We will also provide opportunities to develop eco-awareness and outdoor skills throughout the curriculum. 
MFL: Children will be learning French this year with a focus on About Ourselves(describing a birthday celebration), School Life (describing your school day) and Home and Family (talking about pets).<br>

English Homework for Year 5 1) Reading– it is crucial your child reads most nights. This can just be a small amount but will really help them develop their skills and widen their vocabulary and understanding. It is very helpful if you can ask them to discuss their reading or ask them specific questions about what they have read. It is also important your child reads for pleasure or hears stories read to them which they enjoy alongside their specific targeted reading books. Stickers are given at different points for reaching specific milestones as noted in the children’s reading diaries. WE EXPECT EVERY CHILD TO READ AT LEAST 3 TIMES PER WEEK FOR A MINIMUM OF 10 MINUTES EACH TIME AND FOR THIS TO BE NOTED IN THEIR READING DIARIES. 

2) Spellings - it is vital your child practices these to help them develop their vocabulary skills, accuracy and confidence when writing/decoding. All children will be in a spelling group linked to their Quest Castle. Each week they will focus on a spelling rule and have a list of words which use that rule to help them practice. Children will be given an activity to apply a selection of these on a Friday and will be rewarded for learning the key rule with a charm on their Spelling Quest Sheet. Alongside this, they will have Wizard Words which are common exception words they should practice throughout the term ready for their Wizard Word Activity to test these at the end of term. WE EXPECT EVERY CHILD TO PRACTICE IN DIFFERENT WAYS AT LEAST 3 TIMES PER WEEK FOR A MINIMUM OF 5 MINUTES EACH TIME.<br>

Maths Homework for Year 5 3) KIRFs – Key Instant Recall Facts. 
Each half term, we choose a different focus and ask you to help us to encourage your child to learn their instant recall facts. We test the children at the start and the end of the half term and hope to see an improvement. We use the 6 second rule set by the government for the Time Tables Test to define whether recall is instant so please do encourage your child to answer quickly. 
WE EXPECT EVERY CHILD TO PRACTICE THEIR KIRF AT REGULAR INTERVALS THROUGHOUT THE WEEK RESULTING IN A MINIMUM OF 15 MINUTES PRACTICE WITH THIS. 

4) Target Skill Practice – your child will be set specific targets to achieve with their Maths Skills. These will be different depending on your child’s year group. In Year 5, these will be set on Mathletics. 
WE EXPECT EVERY CHILD TO PRACTICE THEIR TARGET SKILLS FOR AT LEAST 30 MINUTES EACH WEEK, THIS CAN BE IN ONE SESSION OR SPLIT INTO TWO.<br>

WIDER CURRICULUM AND LIFE SKILLS OPTIONAL HALF TERMLY ACTIVITIES FOR YEAR 5 1) Topic Home Learning Projects – A choice of suggested cross curricular tasks will be sent home at the beginning of each topic. Please encourage your child to complete as many tasks as possible ensuring a minimum of one per country to ensure they travel around the world each half term. WE ENCOURAGE ALL CHILDREN TO BRING IN THEIR WORK FOR THEIR CLASS TO CELEBRATE ON A FRIDAY. EACH PIECE OF COMPLETED WORK WILL BE REWARDED WITH ONE ENTRY INTO THE BIG PRIZE DRAW. EACH CHILD WHO TRAVELS AROUND THE WORLD WITHIN THE HALF TERM WILL RECEIVE 10 ADDITIONAL ENTRIES FOR THE BIG PRIZE DRAW. THE MORE ENTRIES YOUR CHILD GETS THE MORE CHANCE THEY HAVE OF WINNING IN OUR END OF THE YEAR BIG PRIZE DRAW. 

2) Life Skills Activities – A focus Life Skill will be set each half term and your child is encouraged to try and show this during the half term. WE ENCOURAGE ALL CHILDREN TO BRING IN EVIDENCE OF THIS FOR THEIR CLASS TO CELEBRATE ON A FRIDAY. EACH HALF TERM A CHILD WILL BE CHOSEN AS THE LIFE SKILLS CHAMPION FOR THE CLASS. THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE A GOLD STAR PIN BADGE.<br>

WIDER CURRICULUM AND LIFE SKILLS OPTIONAL HALF TERMLY ACTIVITIES FOR YEAR 5 3) Curious Challenges and Brain Boosters – As part of our Feel-Good Friday, a suggested Curious Challenge and Brain Booster are set each week for your child to choose to complete at home if they wish. We also set one Deeper Thinking Question each week. These all focus on good Mental Health. 
WE ENCOURAGE ALL CHILDREN TO BRING IN EVIDENCE OF THIS FOR THEIR CLASS TO CELEBRATE ON A FRIDAY. EACH HALF TERM A CHILD WILL BE CHOSEN AS THE MENTAL HEALTH CHAMPION FOR THE CLASS. THE WINNER WILL RECEIVE A SMILEY FACE PIN BADGE.<br>

Further Information Please ensure all items of clothing are labelled so we can return these when lost.​

Reading books should come to school every day.​

PE kits should be left in school.  
PE Kits will be returned at the end of every half term for washing and should be returned by the first Wednesday of the new half term.​
