What is it?

T

he

British Council

is inviting

a group of curators from

museums across

the Western Balkans

– a

“Collaborative Collections”

to

work with us, explore our collection

and together

to create an exhibition. The exhibition will then travel across the region, and using your curatorial

experience we

ask you to create an exciting and compelling presentation of your own choosing in your museum or gallery

.

The partners will be drawn from those that worked with us on the Moving Museums project.

GIRL POWER:

Politics, gender, conflict and consumerism

The

B

ritish

C

ouncil Collection is a fascinating selection of works from the 1930s to the present day, and features works from some pivotal moments in art history.

One of those pivotal moments in more recent times was the emergence of the Young British Artists of the 1990s. Those artists inspired an energetic and enterprising approach to making and showing art, from the mediums used to the unabashed immediacy of the themes, who used themselves, mass media, or whatever was happening in their lives as their starting point. It also saw a group of exciting women artists (Tracey

Emin

, Sarah Lucas, Gillian Wearing) establish themselves in the art world and whose work continues to resonate today.

The British Council has staged some great exhibitions in the

region

over the years,

such as

Grayson Perry: The Vanity of Small

Differences

and

Damien

Hirst

:

New

Religion

but

these have focused primarily on male artists; now it is time to use the collection to celebrate women in visual art.

Using

the visual language of magazines, advertising, mass media and film in either low-tech or highly stylised ways, these artists point the spotlight on social issues, satirise the political world or share intimate thoughts and feelings with their audience. Issues such as politics, gender, conflict and consumerism are perfectly suited to the formats of photography, film and also sound and this method of direct, accessible and socially engaged work has continued to influence female artists in Britain and beyond.

Through these works we see a group of confident, powerful women using art as the ultimate communication tool to connect with the world.

Slide4

The proposal

We would like you to work together to select a group of works by female

contemporary artists from the British Council Collection as

a nucleus for the exhibition. You

will then use this core list as a basis for an exhibition which you will develop and present

in a way that speaks to you and your

audience - this

could involve your own collection or local

artists,

for example. The

core list

will

tour to all the partner museums.

Slide5

Ideas to consider for

individual presentations of work could be:

To

invite local artists to create new work in response to the core list

To add works from their own

collection

To borrow works from other collections

To have events to add to the exhibition

A film screening programme

To work with local educational institutions (students for example) to curate supplementary works from their own

collection

Slide6

Objectives

To build on the work established by the Moving Museums programme, to encourage collaborative thinking and working with institutional partners

That

a

s a result of this exhibition, partner museums are better equipped to continue to present exhibition programmes of high quality

That knowledge and best practice is shared across the partners

To attract new audiences to the partner museums, in particular those aged 18 – 35.

Slide7
