The severity of this disease varies with the strain of the virus the age of the pig and the immune status of the herd Acute infections which are caused by highly virulent isolates and have a high mortality rate are likely to be diagnosed rapidly How nodosus in association with a number of other bacteria There are many strains of D nodosus and they vary in the severity of the disease they cause In an infected flock several strains of D nodosus may be present For regulatory purposes footrot infec 75 CONTAGIOUS AGALACTIA SUMMARY Contagious agalactia is a serious disease syndrom e of sheep and goats that is characterised by mastitis arthritis keratoconjunc tivitis and occasionally abortion Mycoplasma agalactiae is the main cause of the dis ease In lambs and kids losses due to septicemia and pneumonia can be high Some outbreaks may affect most of the animals on a farm Although contagious agalactia has been eradicated from some countries it may be difficult to control where it is widespread It is spread during breeding or through contact with contaminated objects This disease occurs very rarely in the United States and does not affect other livestock or people However it is highly conta gious among horses and can be difficult to detect What is contagious equine metritis A Contagious equine metritis CEM is a transmis sible exotic venereal disease of horses caused by the bacterium Taylorella equigenitalis For more detailed information about CEM please visit the US Depart ment of Ag Joseph Francis Max .
