Ophelia and Gertrude: Transcript

By Andrea Carlin and Tristin drake Thesis In Hamlet written by Shakespeare the female characters Ophelia and Gertrude both have intimate connections with Hamlet Ophelia as his loveinterest and Gertrude as his mother The two women are foils to each other since Ophelia is an innocent and obedient maiden who dies under the hands of a powerful man whereas to Hamlet Gertrude is seen as promiscuous and unfaithful to her late husband by remarrying Claudius who is also a powerful man who happened to kill her. Elaine showalter. Ophelia literally has no story without Hamlet. Shakespeare offers very little information from which to imagine a past for Ophelia. Cultural links between femininity, female sexuality, insanity, and representation. I. n her essay "Representing Ophelia: Woman, Madness and the Responsibilities of Feminist Criticism," Elaine Showalter asks if Ophelia is "indeed representative of Woman," and if her madness stands "for the oppression of women in society as well as tragedy." This question is certainly not the only one that feminists would be interested in exploring, but it is one of the central concerns of critical scholarship over the years. Consequently, scenes in which Ophelia plays a significant role, although limited, provide some of the best opportunities to apply the feminist lens. Three scenes in particular would be appropriate:. Thesis. In Shakespeare’s play, . Hamlet. , the two female characters Gertrude and Ophelia possess characteristics of the “angel”, or the ideal renaissance woman. This is ironic because the “ideal renaissance woman” would not have a large impact on society, as Gertrude and Ophelia do on the plot of Hamlet. This shows that Hamlet transcends the binary model because both Gertrude and Ophelia show characteristics of both, the angel and the whore.. Advice.
