Whom do I have in heav'n beside You, / O gracious, highest Deity? / On earth I long for none beside You; / You are my sole security. / If I should walk an arduous path, / You lead and guide me by the hand.

When of my burdens I am weary, / my flesh is failing, faint my soul. / Death has no sting, no power o'er me, / when You are still my hope, O Lord. / You are my heart's foundation firm, / eternal lot for which I yearn.

When I draw near unto You, Father, / I always find there joy and peace. / Thus may I trust in You, my Savior, / declare Your wondrous works of grace. / Praise be to You that I am free / to walk Your path to victory.

The Third Article of the Creed

I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy Christian church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.Slide14

What is meant by this?

I believe that I cannot of my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Ghost has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me by His gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth and preserves it in union with Jesus Christ in the true faith; in which Christian Church He daily and richly forgives me and all believers all our sins; and at the last day, will raise up me and all the dead, and will grant me and all believers in Christ everlasting life. This is most certainly true.Slide15

3. What does the Holy Spirit do?

Calls

Gathers

Enlightens

Informs, teaches, makes clear

Sanctifies

Makes holy

Preserves

Forgives

Raises from the dead

Grants eternal lifeSlide16

Calls

And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely. (Rev 22:17)

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.

(Matt 11:28)Slide17

Gathers

But Jerusalem which is above is free,

which is the mother of us all. (Gal 4:26)

Endeavouring to keep the

unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

There is one body, and one Spirit, even as

ye are called in one hope of your calling;

One Lord, one faith, one baptism, One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all. (

Eph

4:3-6)Slide18

Gathers

ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel (Phil. 1:27)

Whatever good in me may shine / comes only from Thy light divine. (SHZ 335, v.4)Slide19

Gathers

Isä taivaan, rukoilen (

SL 309)

Gracious God, we pray to You (SHZ 429)Slide20

Enlightens

The Holy Spirit informs, teaches, makes clear, …

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

(John 14:26)

You help all the poor, weak, and unsure. (SHZ 135)

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit

searcheth

all things, yea, the deep things of God. (1 Cor. 2:10)Slide21

Enlightens

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God (Rom. 8:16)

that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. (1Tim 3:15)Slide22

Sanctifies (makes holy) Rom 8:6-9

Man is unholy and unacceptable to God

“For to be carnally minded is death” (v. 6)

“the carnal mind is enmity against God” (v. 7)

“they that are in the flesh cannot please God” (v. 8)

The Holy Spirit sanctifies man upon earth, making him acceptable to God

“but to be spiritually minded is life and peace” (v. 6)

Only the Holy Spirit can make man holy

“Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His” (v. 8)

Therefore, it is extremely important to receive and preserve the Holy Spirit within us.Slide24

Preserves

The Holy Spirit keeps us in faith and on the way to heaven

You make us see heaven is near! (SHZ 135)

No man can comprehend / that joy that has no end (SHZ 578, v.3)Slide25

Forgives

Forgiveness is not possible without the Holy Spirit

Receive ye the Holy Ghost:

Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them;

and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained.

(Jn 20:21-23)

When my sins are preached forgiven /

peace my restless soul can own. /

For this Word is come from

heaven, quickened by the Holy

Ghost. (SHZ 487 v.6)Slide26

Gives life

For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify* the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (Rom 8:13)

It is the spirit that

quickeneth

;

the flesh

profiteth

nothing:

the words that I speak unto

you, they are spirit,

and they are life

(John 6:63)

* mortify = defeat, crush, conquer, put down …Slide27

False spirits

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. (1Jn 4:1)

But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. (

1 Cor

2:14)

He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churchesSlide28

The Holy Spirit is a gentle spirit that wants to dwell

in a heart that is free of sin

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear;

but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. (2 Tim. 1:7)
