)
Read
Jn 13:8
.
Jesus had repeatedly warned about the treachery of someone within the ranks of the Twelve (Jn 6:71; 12:4; 13:2)
. Slide3
~
The reason why Jesus now takes the
pains
to show
inclusion
of Judas
was so
that their faith might be
strengthened
for the critical hour.
~
As in Jn 6:70, the argument assumes
that
not all choosing is to
salvation
.
But
here Christ is speaking about eternal
election.Slide4
~
The unsaved are sometimes adorned
by
God with the gifts of the Spirit, to
carry
out the office or work
which He assigns to them.
~
But this is very different from the
sanctification
of the Spirit with which
the
Lord honors only His own
children.Slide5
What Christ declares in v. 18 He
does so partly on Judas’ account, to make him more inexcusable, and partly for the sake of the others, that they might not be shaken by Judas’ downfall
.
~ They
will begin to realize that Jesus
had
known it all along, and that
what
was
happening was not a
frustration
but a
fulfilment
of the
divine
plan
. Slide6
“
I know the ones I have chosen.
”
The
very fact that they will persevere, Jesus ascribes to their election
.
~ S
ince
He guides those whom He has
elected
, all the schemes that Satan
can
use will not stop them from
persevering
to the
end.
~
It is also because of their election
that
they will not only persevere
but
also live out and pursue
godliness
. Slide7
Here Jesus sets before them the free election on which they are founded,
that they may claim nothing for themselves but, on the contrary, may acknowledge that they differ from Judas by grace alone and not by their own virtue.
~
He knew
what kind
of men they
were
.
~
Yet
He chose them anyway
.Slide8
Read
Jn 13:18b
.
~
Jesus’ betrayal was necessary to
fulfill
Scripture – specifically, Ps 41:9
.
~ Cf.
2Sam 15, 16, 17; Ps
55:12-14
Now
, what Christ our Master and Lord suffered, we who are His members/followers should endure patiently (cf. Jn 13:16)
.
Read
Jn 13:19
.
~
Here
Jesus reveals His very heart
.
~
He shows what a kind Savior He is.
Slide9
At
the same time in this statement Jesus tells His disciples that when one reprobate
turns his back on them,
it should not be a good enough reason for them to be discouraged.
~
It ought, rather, to confirm their faith
.
The
careful groundwork Jesus here lays proved sufficiently strong to keep the disciples together
.
~
They did not scatter immediately after
the crucifixion.Slide10
This
phrase
(Jn 13:19b)
means that Christ is the promised Messiah
.
So when Judas later on betrays the Master with a kiss, and Jesus has seemingly suffered a defeat, when the Messiah experiences the bitter agonies of Gethsemane and Calvary
, the disciples must continue to believe
.
~
They must continue to believe that
“I
am
He,”
that is, that Jesus is
whatever
He claimed to be
.
