for prophecies, they will pass away;
as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.Slide10
LOVE NEVER ENDS

Love never ends, but
all
spiritual gifts will end eventually.8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. (v.8)The word for “end” here means literally “to fall” [Gk. piptó]; the implication is more than existence but essence of all. Unlike what the Corinthian Christians thought as lasting power of the Christian life, all spiritual gifts (especially the three most desired) will end and be no longer needed.Applying to today’s world, we can put anything we value so highly (e.g., career, ability, possessions, fame, power, etc.) in place of these three superlative gifts.Slide11

Love never ends, but
when the “perfect” comes the “partial” will pass away.9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. (vs. 9-10)Why will the superlative spiritual gifts pass away? It is because they are incomplete necessities before the perfect comes.What is this “perfect”? It means the culmination of our salivation at the second coming of Jesus Christ.When the perfect comes, we shall see Jesus face to face and incomplete gifts will no longer be needed in Christ’s presence! Love never ends,
therefore
love gives us a more mature way to live our Christian life here and now.11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. (v.11)Paul’s first illustration of the truth that love is the never-ending essence of life in the Kingdom of God is from his own recollection of childhood and adulthood.Like his growth, spiritual gifts (or anything we value) compared to love is like children’s toys (vs. the future life).But Paul’s intention seems more than illustrating—he charges us to look to love as mature ways to live out our everyday life.Slide14

Love never ends,
therefore love gives us an eternal perspective.12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. (v.12) 2 Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.1 John 3:2The second illustration is to look into a mirror; unlike modern ones, first-century mirrors were shined metals (blurry image).Now, we see blurry reflections of real things by faith; but “then” (Jesus’ return) we will see face to face and know fully. The charge is clear: we are to focus on the eternal perspective and pursue love wholeheartedly.Slide15
