Cacophony & Dissonance

Harsh or discordant word sounds

(This is the opposite of Euphony.)

Dissonance is another word to describe cacophony – a disruption of harmonic sounds or rhythms. A harsh collection of sounds, the use of unpleasant-sounding words.Slide3

Euphony

Pleasant to hear.

A harmonious combination of words.

This can describe any poem that you think sounds pretty! It’s the opposite of cacophony and dissonance. Slide4

Elision

The omission of unstressed syllables in words – most often used to make a word fit in your line of poetry. Can also be used to show an accent. Contractions are elisions: can’t, won’t, I’m, we’re, isn’t, etc.

Ellipsis

The omission of words, but it doesn’t change the meaning, just sounds more poetic.

“I will away”

instead of “I will go away”
