This model monograph is the first scholarly study to put the Ainuthe native people living in Ezo the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelagoat the center of an exploration of Japanese expansion during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries the height of the Tokugawa shogunal era Inspired by new Western historians of the United States Walker positions Ezo not as Japans northern frontier but as a borderland or middle ground By framing his study between the cultural and ecological worlds of the Ainu before and after two centuries of sustained contact with the Japanese the author demonstrates with great clarity just how far the Ainu were incorporated into the Japanese political economy and just how much their ceremonial and material lifenot to mention disease ecology medical culture and their physical environmenthad been infiltrated by Japanese cultural artifacts practices and epidemiology by the early nineteenth century Walker takes a fresh and original approach Rather than presenting a mere juxtaposition of oppression and resistance he offers a subtle analysis of how material and ecological changes induced by trade with Japan set in motion a reorientation of the whole northern culture and landscape Using new and littleknown material from archives as well as Ainu oral traditions and archaeology Walker poses an exciting new set of questions and issues that have yet to be approached in so innovative and thorough a fashion. 27 1). Theirs were cultures in delicate social balance and in economic harmony with the natural order. Rites of Conquest details the struggles of Michigan Indians—the Ojibwa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi, and their neighbors—to maintain unique traditions in the wake of contact with Euro-Americans. The French quest for furs, the colonial aggression of the British, and the invasion of native homelands by American settlers is the backdrop for this fascinating saga of their resistance and accommodation to the new social order. Minavavana\'s victory at Fort Michilimackinac, Pontiac\'s attempts to expel the British, Pokagon\'s struggle to maintain a Michigan homeland, and Big Abe Le Blanc\'s fight for fishing rights are a few of the many episodes recounted in the pages of this book.Beyond wars and warriors, Rites of Conquest is also about diplomacy and negotiation, mythology and magic, birth and death, and the joys and trials of daily life in the native villages of the Great Lakes region. Today, Michigan\'s Indian citizens struggle to solve problems that are a legacy of their past, while they attempt to maintain a distinctive place within modern society. In facing this challenge they often turn to the values and traditions that set them apart as the most enduring peoples of the Great Lakes region.Maps, photographs, and biographical sketches complement the text and make this the most comprehensive yet readable book on the region\'s Native American population. In The Japanese Mind, Roger Davies offers Westerners an invaluable key to the unique aspects of Japanese culture. Readers of this book will gain a clear understanding of what really makes the Japanese, and their society, tick. Among the topics explored: aimai (ambiguity), amae (dependence upon others\' benevolence), amakudari (the nation\'s descent from heaven), chinmoku (silence in communication), gambari (perseverence), giri (social obligation), haragei (literally, belly art implicit, unspoken communication), kenkyo (the appearance of modesty), sempai-kohai (seniority), wabi-sabi (simplicity and elegance), and zoto (gift giving), as well as discussions of childrearing, personal space, and the roles of women in Japanese society. Includes discussion topics and questions after each chapter.
