Principles: Equal Opportunities (Equality and Diversity)
4.2.1.

Aberystwyth University Students Union is actively committed to a policy of equality of opportunity, in its activities, in employment practise and in the service provision for its student members.
AUSU will not discriminate on grounds of sex, marital status, race,
ethnicity, colour
, nationality, disability, trade union activity, sexual orientation, age, language, gender identity, family responsibility, socio-economic background, HIV/AIDS Status, religious or political belief. The list is not exhaustive.

- Aberystwyth
University Students’ Union (
AberSU
) is a safe space for all students, who are entitled to exist in whatever manner they deem appropriate but one which remains respectful to other students.
AberSU believes that all students, regardless of their background, circumstances or protected characteristics deserve to be treated with respect and dignity during their time as members of AberSU.- This
policy document will cover, but is not limited to, the following areas; Bullying
Harassment Cyberbullying Respect towards
AberSU
staff and students.
- This
policy ultimately ensures the safety of all
AberSU
members, elected officers and staff, and enables them to fully enjoy their involvement with
AberSU
free from the fear of all manners of bullying or harassment. This policy will work in conjunction with Aberystwyth Students Union Equal Opportunities Policy, and when following disciplinary procedures, all aspects of that policy will be observed.
Slide6Inductions & Initiations
Aberystwyth
University Students’ Union believes the practice of initiations is a dangerous and degrading exercise that jeopardises the safety of members and reflects negatively on the public image of students
.
AberSU
is also painfully aware that unforeseen circumstances resulting from such activities can cause anguish that may affect students and their families both personally and academically.
- It is also a requirement of the British Universities Colleges Sport (BUCS) that all Universities must have an initiation policy in order to compete in the BUCS competitions.
INITIATIONS & INITIATION CEREMONIES ARE BANNED
Slide7Initiations
- An
‘Initiation Ceremony’
is defined as:
- An
event in which members, (often new members) of a club are expected to perform a task or tasks, as a means to gaining credibility, status or entry within that club. This may be achieved by peer pressure (although not explicitly) and may compromise a person’s inherent dignity by forcing or requiring an individual to drink alcohol, eat mixtures of various foodstuffs, nudity and any other behaviour that may be deemed humiliating. This also extends to online initiation activities on social networking sites or blogs, etc. Individuals should not be pressured into divulging personal information, be subject to comments, photos or images that demean or compromise the dignity of individuals or groups.
