Tight-Five Sevens – “8 Ball”
GOAL
Improve
continuity and set-piece play of props, hookers, locks, and larger loose forwards—positions typically who are not involved in the 7-a-side sub-season.
Provide
a competitive framework by which tight-five athletes can continue their on-field growth, in addition to their S&C work in the gym, during the Sevens sub-season, a time when many props and locks are isolated from skill development.
WHAT
The
general rules of rugby, with the below exceptions:
8
v 8, requires 16 athletes mostly props, locks, hookers. Augment with loose forwards where needed.
4
x 5 min periods per match to keep as anaerobic as possible.
Reduced
field width from 20 to 30 meters depending on skill of
athletes.
Increases
contact
opportunities.
Decreases
length athletes
run.
Increase
anaerobic development over aerobic capacity.
5-person scrums (a la “Tens”):Scrumhalf (a forward) and two additional forwards in backline.Scrums at the 5-meter line become 6-person scrums (props, locks, and No.8). 2 additional points awarded for “push-over” scrum tries. Full Lineout rules as per 7s or XVs.All penalties and free-kicks are choice of either scrum or lineout at the mark of infraction. Slide31
