2. When WestPoint Stevens, the US’s largest home textiles company, wanted to place the logo on their Ralph Lauren sheets and pillowcases, they conducted an internet survey and discovered that 76% of consumer’s responding preferred Egyptian cotton as compared to only 16% who preferred Pima cotton.
3. History of Egyptian cottonThe origins of ELS cotton can be traced back to a hybrid species of Sea Island cotton that was brought to Egypt around 1825, where it was further modified by inbreeding with native Egyptian cotton plants.
4. History of PimaThe first ELS Cotton released was ‘Yuma’ in 1908 which was a reselection from ‘Mit-Afifi’, an Egyptian cultivar developed in 1889 from a cross of ‘Ashmouni’.
5. the goal of this study is to determine the differences between the properties of Egyptian long staple cotton, and Pima ELS cotton, to evaluate statistically the changes in yarn quality of these two kinds of cotton fibers. The considerations presented are intended for the benefit of yarn producers and textile manufacturers.

19. conclusionGiza 94 and Giza 86 were found to be generally better to Supima in single yarn strength, yarn unevenness, yarn neps and hairiness. However, as fineness is required and preferred by luxury mills, Giza 94 could be regarded as comparable to Supima, although the price of Giza 94 and Giza 86 is less than Supima by 15%.
