5 POLICE BEATJulio Yero began his career as a police ocer in the Town of Surfside. Now he has come full circle. He was recently welcomed back and sworn in as Surfside’s new Police Captain. He was formerly a Lieutenant with the Miami Beach Police Department and held command positions Captain Julio Yero Joins Surfside Police Department in the Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division and the Internal Aairs Unit. He also managed stang and logistics for major events such as the Super Bowl, Spring Break, Memorial Day Weekend, Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve celebrations. He led a contingent of Miami Beach Police ocers as a security detail in Washington, D.C. for President Obama’s Inauguration. Captain Yero has supervised the Homicide Squad and investigated murders, high prole death penalty cases and police ocer involved shootings. He was the Commander of the Hostage Negotiations team for the past seven years and worked closely with the SWAT team on numerous critical incidents. Captain Julio Yero (R) takes the oath of oce from Chief David Allen. 13th Citizens Police Academy Graduates Costumed Families Enjoy Halloween Block Party Police ocers and sta hand out glow sticks and candy bags to trick or treaters.Rolex Thief ArrestedAfter a thorough investigation and working with other police departments, Surfside Police arrested a notorious Rolex thief who stole watches from a Surfside jewelry store in the 9500 block of Harding Avenue. The crime took place on the afternoon of October 29, when two Rolex watches valued at $56,000 were stolen. The subject ed into a waiting vehicle. Through surveillance video, Surfside police detectives identied the subject. He was wanted for similar thefts and robberies of Rolex watches in Sarasota and Boca Raton. Less than two weeks later, the individual was stopped in Hialeah for a trac infraction and driving with a suspended license. Hialeah Police contacted Surfside Police who arrested him for grand theft. The Halloween Block Party sponsored by the Surfside Police Department has become a Town tradition with thousands gathering in the residential neighborhood to compare costumes, socialize and pick-up goodies for the children. The 25 participants of the 13th Citizens Police Academy class graduated on November 17 after completing the 12 week program. It was one of the most popular and successful in the history of the Academy. The class had exciting presentations and demonstrations from the Miami-Dade Police Department Aviation Unit, Station 21 Fire Rescue, Miami-Dade Schools Police K-9 Unit, State Attorney’s Oce, Crime Scene Investigations, Homicide, S.W.A.T. and the Marine Patrol Unit.
