I hope everyone is having a great summer I know I am !! Be careful, ride safe, some of the best riding is yet to come!! ~ Brion Director Update - Brion Muzzy BUSINESS NAME JUNE 2015 VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 Vee - Twin Rumblings Newsletter of the Central Vermont H.O.G. JULY!!! What happened to May and June? I hope everyone has had a chance to rack up some miles. I've put on over 3 K so far, some of it from really great Chapter rides. Speaking of rides, if anyone is planning a (LONG) distance ride, multi- ple days away from home, you may want to dig out your welcome package from HOG. Pull out the Adventure Guide (Benefits, Experiences, and Part- nerships). In my booklet on page 11 it explains the H.O.G. Roadside Assistance Additional Coverage Chart. There are four levels of coverage, (Standard) which everyone has as part of your National H.O.G. mem- bership. The next three involve extra fees, (Deluxe) $19.95 per year (Ultra) $29.95 per year (Ultra Plus) $49.95 per year. With each higher level there are more benefits to receive, far too many for me to list here. It may be worth the peace of mind having this extra cover- age, especially on a long distance trip. If you mis- placed or lost your Adventure Guide booklet simply call the number on the back of your H.O.G. card for the details. Hope to see you all soon, Justen THINK SAFE, BE SAFE, RIDE SAFE Asst. Director Update - Justen Elliott Asst. Director Update Pg. 1 Safety Officer Update Pg. 9 PAGE 2 VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 Central Vermont H.O.G. Chapter #5218 V ee T win Rumblings June Social - Meeting Minutes Justen Elliot, Assistant Director, started off the meeting with a welcome and a request for all veterans to identify themselv es – they were thanked for their service to our country. We pledged allegiance to the flag. Charter member, Joe Benning, was asked to share his plans for a ride to take place Sept 4 - 19. It is expected to be approximatel y 4000 miles, averaging 250 - 300 miles per day. Included in the planned route are (not in this order): Memphis (Elvis’ home), the Blues Highway, New Orleans, the Natchez Trace Highway, Nashville, and the Blue Ridge Parkway. There will be 16 overnights. Joe recommends anticipating spending $100 per day (per person). If you want to be part of the rid e, connect with Joe and provide him with your email address, cell phone number, and name of next - of - kin. John Lyon, of Wilkins Harley - Davidson dealership, updated us on the expansion project planned for the dealership. The building on the property adjacent to the current dealership will be razed, but asbestos has been found in it. This needs to be removed b efo re demolition can be done, causing a delay. Justen reported that a number of Central Vermont HOG chapter members have completed Experienced Rider Courses this spring. Joyce Luttrell, treasurer, reported that the last reported Chapter account balance was $1868.02. Added income since then has be en $366, and expenditures have been $179.18, resulting in a current balance of $2054.84. Kevin Frost, Executive Road Captain, reported on recent rides: to New Hampshire via the Kancamagus Highway; Vermont Thunder for Memorial Day; and a pre - Americade ride to Lake George, NY. The next planned ride will be heading to a great BBQ place in Bethel, ME on June 14th. Other rides (which are on the website calendar) are the following: June 20th to Laconia, NH; June 2 7th Ladies of Harley ride; June 28th Blessing of the Bikes ride to Groveton, NH; and a July 11th ride to the Cajun Snack Shack in Lo well, VT. The planned activity for this June social was a ride to a local spot for ice cream…but wet weather prevented that, so we play ed sev- eral games of BINGO (which prompted a comment by Joe Benning, that – as a founding member of the Chapter – he never expected to be playing BINGO at a meeting!). As it turned out, he was one of three winners! After a break for snacks and casual conversation, we wrapped up the meeting with door prize drawings and the 50/50 drawing. The next social is scheduled for July 14th at 6:30 p.m. Submitted by Linda Lamell, Secretary and Chapter Historian trecision Electrical & /ontracng, LL/ Mark Fournier ~ (802) 27E - 4731 aaster Licensed Electrician / Lnsured wesidenal, /ommercial, Troubleshoong, Denerators, Solar, Cire Alarm, Security, Alarm aonitoring & Service., Any of your electrical needs! Hard to believe that it’s July already!! While June was fairly wet, we managed to stay dry on all of our sched- uled chapter rides.. In addition to the chapter ride on August 15, there’s also a benefit ride being hosted by Gifford Medical Center in Randolph, VT. Please see page 8 of this months newsletter for details. Since we got rained out in June, we’ll try again in July. For the July social, we will plan to conduct a quick 15 — 20 minute meet- ing and then a ride to Williamstown for ice cream. (again, weather permitting). Hope to see all of you there! Chris PAGE 5 VOLUME 28, ISSUE 6 Central Vermont H.O.G. Chapter #5218 V ee T win Rumblings We have had some great chapter rides with good weather, lots of friends and laughter, good roads, beautiful scenery and of co urs e delicious food and ice cream! To insure that we continue to enjoy these benefits of riding, there are many things that we ca n d o to keep everyone safe. 1. Take a Motorcycle Safety Course. If you are a beginning rider this is an invaluable experience. If you have been riding for years, there are still lessons to be learned and skills to be improved on. 2. Get the Right Gear. Since a motorcycle offers little protection, what we wear is our protection system. 3. Protect your Feet. Rugged shoes help to protect from the elements, provide traction and balance. 4. Ride within your skills. To stay safe, always ride within your skill level. You should still challenge yourself - thats how your skills will grow - but you need to do it in a safe, controlled way. 5. Avoid distraction. One of the keys to staying safe on a motorcycle is staying hyper aware of everything that is going on aro und us. Motorcycles are harder for other vehicles to see, so we need to see and avoid them. Our reaction time depends on our full at ten tion. 6. Leave enough space. Always leave plenty of stopping distance, if you need to stop quickly, your wheels can lock up and go in to a slide, know how much space you need to stop safely. Also leave a generous following distance between your bike and the vehic le in front of you. 7. Watch the Weather. In the rain you only have half the traction of a car and your visibility is lessened. If you have to rid e in the rain, be very cautious at the beginning of the storm, as the rain brings up oil and other residue making the road extremely s lip pery. 8. Educate your Passengers. Its fun to share the ride with someone on the back but make sure they also have the right gear a nd that they know how they should move around on the back to keep you both safe. 9. Look Twice. Never assume that a driver sees you, ride defensively and take responsibility for staying safe around cars. 10. Wear a Helmet. The most important thing you can do to stay safe on a motorcycle is to wear an approved helmet. Head inj uri es are the leading cause of death for motorcycle riders.
