Burr would not step aside. The tie-breaker was in the H.of R.

1800- France gets the LA Territory from Spain

1802- Spain pulls out of the territory. Removes our right of deposit .

Jefferson sends James Monroe to buy New Orleans and territory to the east for 10 million dollars.

Monroe buys N.O. and the land to the west for 15 million. Slide13

John Marshall was the judge for this treason trial.

Said that proof of overt acts was required, not just treasonous intentions

France and Britain are back at war.

USA is a neutral power that is shipping to both Britain and France.

Britain closes French ports to trade. called the Orders in Council. Slide21

The British navy fired upon a U.S. ship named the Chesapeake.
