Background: Women in the War

“Rosie the Riveter” was a character in an American wartime song, written for the use of encouraging women to join the war effort

Based off: Rosalind Palmer Walter (built of fighter airplane)

iconic American image in the fight to broaden women’s civil rights.1940-1945: the female percentage of the U.S. workforce increased from 27% to nearly 37%.1945: ¼ married women worked outside homeDuring WWII, "Rosie" was used to refer to all women who worked in defense industries (not just riveters)Slide3

Background: The Picture

based off of a group of women most of whom were named Rose (these women varied in class, ethnicity, geography, and background)

1943: Norman Rockwell created the painting of Rosie, appeared on the cover of the Memorial Day issue of the

Saturday Evening Post. In Rockwell’s image a muscular Rosie takes a sandwich break, with her feet resting on a copy of Hitler's Mein Kampf, while her gun is not in use. This image of Rosie was hypothetical, based on Michelangelo's

Isaiah

from the Sistine Chapel, and the model was not a riveter, but a dental hygienist, Mary Keefe (Rockwell’s neighbor).Slide4

Background: The Picture

The iconic picture of Rosie the Riveter isn’t the originally Rosie.

In 1942, J. Howard Miller was hired by Westinghouse Company’s War Production Coordinating Committee to create a series of posters for the war effort.

One of the posters made was the famous “We Can Do It!” poster. Around the 1970-80s the poster was re-known as the famous “Rosie the Riveter”, although that wasn’t the intention of the poster. Slide5

Significance

With men leaving to fight in the war, there were many open jobs and positions available for women.

Rosie played a significant part in advertising because it influenced women to take on the roles that men used to have.

Many women were hesitant to take on these jobsCampaigning techniques such as the famous “Rosie the Riveter” advertisement encouraged women to step up and play a more active role. Slide8

Significance

She represents any woman defense worker. And for many women, she's an example of a strong, competent foremother.

Rosie helped inspire women to fight for their place in the workforce along men.

She got women to give up their domestic jobs and to take the jobs that the men left behindWith more women entering the workforce women could prove that they could do a man's jobSlide9

Woman’s Work during WWII

After leaving their ordinary jobs women started in factories.

During the war the women increased the workforce by 50 percent. Racial barriers were broken as various minority members went to work.

Jobs Include: building supplies for the war like planes, weapons, tanks, and ammoworking in steel millslumber yardsfreight yardsworking/operating heavy machinerySlide10

WWII Hall of Fame

Rosie was an American icon that represented the growing ideas of feminism and patriotism

She would belong in the “WWII Hall of Fame” because of her influence on women joining the workforce.

Within the aircraft industry, more than 65% were made up of women. (Only 1% pre-wars)Represents Women’s RightsSlide11

Rosie the Riveter Today

1980:

The Life and Times of Rosie the Riveter

(documentary)October 14, 2000: the “Rosie the Riveter” Memorial (designed by Susan Schwartzenberg and Cheryl Barton) was dedicated on the site of the former Kaiser Shipyard, in Richmond, CA, where women built a warship in a record-breaking four days.Interviews of several real-life Rosies are also included in Ken Burns's series The War (2007)Slide12

Women During the War and Significance Today

Women did step up and assume a larger role in society, however it would take many years for women to fully reach the same level of power men had in the workforce.

To this day there are many occupations where women get paid less than men.

Thanks to the successful advertising campaign of Rosie the Riveter, the movement of women joining the workforce began which helped women get to the position they are in today. Slide13
