Tech Que: “Shake It Up” Title Graphic

Slide2

Hello everybody! Are you ready to shake things up?

(Kids respond.)

Me too! As I’m sure you all know, one of the best times of the year is coming soon. What is it?

(Kids respond.)

That’s right—Christmas time! It’s coming fast! But don’t you wish it could come faster? Sometimes it’s so hard to wait, isn’t it?

Slide3

Especially when you want to open your presents so badly! Let me ask you a question—have you ever picked up one of your wrapped presents when no one was looking and shook it a bit to see if you could figure out what’s inside?

(Illustrate by shaking one of the wrapped presents on stage.)

Slide4

It’s so tempting, isn’t it? Well guess what? For this next month during the “Shake It Up” series, that’s exactly what we’ll be doing. But instead of figuring out what presents we’ll be getting, we’re going to be figuring out the next part of the Big Bible Story. Before we get to today’s part of the story, though, let’s look back and see if we can remember what’s happened in the Bible up to this point.

Slide5

Here’s how it’s going to work. I’m going to ask you all some questions. If you know the answer, instead of raising your hand, I want you to do your craziest “Shake It Up” dance.

Slide6

Have the kids stand up. After reading each question,

PLAY the “Shake It Up”

music jam and have the kids do their dance. Call on one of the kids for their answer. Repeat this for each of the questions.

Slide7

In

the beginning, God created the heavens and the what?

(Answer: Earth)

God had a perfect relationship with people until what messed it up?

(Answer: Sin)

But God came up with a plan to fix things. He chose a special family through which He would send the ultimate Rescuer. Later on the family would be called what?

(Answer: the Israelites)

Slide8

While

in Egypt, the Israelites grew in number, but Pharaoh would turn them all into slaves. Who did God use to lead the Israelites out of slavery?

(Answer: Moses)

After wandering in the desert for 40 years, the Israelites finally made it to the Promised Land. While in the Promised Land, God raised up leaders to help the Israelites follow Him. What were those leaders called?

(Answer: Judges)

Even though God said it was a bad idea, the Israelites decided they wanted to be like their neighbors and have a king. What was the name of their first king?

(Answer: Saul)

Slide9

Tech Que: “The Big Bible Story” Graphic

At first, it looked like the kings were going to serve Israel well. But just as God had warned, the kings of Israel eventually led them to destruction. Let’s see what happened first.

Slide10

During the small group connect time, kids will have had a chance to shake different presents and guess what’s inside.

Hold up present #1

. Ask the kids what they think is in it. Present #1 contains coins. After taking some answers, remove the lid and reveal its contents. (Optional: after each reveal, play the “Shake It Up” music jam and have the kids who guessed correctly do their crazy “Shake It Up” dance.)

Slide11

The Israelites had to pay a

ton

of money in taxes to build a new Temple. It was hard to pay that much money, so the 10 tribes in the north asked the king to get rid of the taxes. What do you think the king said?

(Kids respond.)

Kings sure do like their money, so he said NO WAY!

(Have the kids shout NO WAY! with you.)

As you can imagine, the Northern tribes of Israel were NOT too happy. Let’s see what they did.

Slide12

Hold up present #2. Ask the kids what they think is in it. Present #2 contains a pair or pairs of scissors. After taking some answers, remove the lid and reveal its contents.

Slide13

The 10 Northern tribes of Israel decided to split from the 2 Southern tribes and the nation of Israel was cut in two.

(Snip the scissors in the air as you say “cut in two.”)

In your sassiest voice, can you all say “We’re

outta

here”?

(Kids repeat.)

So the 10 Northern tribes were now called Israel and the 2 Southern tribes were called Judah.

Slide14

Divide the kids so that about 80% of the kids scoot to one side and 20% go to the other. Tell the larger group of kids that they’re going to be Israel and the smaller group is going to be Judah.

Slide15

Now, instead of just one king, there were two—and that means double the trouble. Just as God had warned, the 2 kings sent the people’s sons into battle against each other.

(Have each side put up their “dukes” and say “GRRRR” to each other.)

The kings took the people’s money and land. Worst of all, the kings led their people to worship idols and other gods. It was getting

really

bad! Let’s see what God did about it.

Slide16

Hold up present #3.

Ask the kids what they think is in it. Present #3 contains a cell phone. After taking some answers, remove the lid and reveal its contents.

Slide17

So do you think God called them on the phone?

(Kids respond.)

Not quite, but kind of. Like a cell phone, God used people called “prophets” to talk to the nations of Israel and Judah. He would give the prophets a message and the prophets would tell the people. Sometimes God would use the prophets to call His people away from worshipping idols and back to worshipping Him.

Slide18

But other times, God would tell the prophets about something that would happen in the future. Do you want to see some of these prophecies?

(Kids respond.)

Okay, take a look at these prophecies from a prophet named Isaiah:

Slide19

Tech Que: “The Lord himself will give you a miraculous sign. The virgin is going to have a baby. She will give birth to a son. And he will be called Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

And how about this one:

Tech Que: “For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

Slide20

Who do you think these prophecies are talking about?

(Allow kids to answer.)

That’s right—it’s Jesus! Can you believe it? Hundreds of years before Jesus was even born, God gave His people hope for a coming Savior who would wash

their

sins away. Let me show you what God said next.

Slide21

Hold up present #4.

Ask the kids what they think is in it. Present #4 contains nothing. After taking answers, remove the lid and reveal its contents. Note: If you’ve been having the kids do the “Shake It Up” dance after each reveal, do NOT have them do it for this one.

Slide22

Nothing.

(Kneel or sit close to the kids and speak these next lines more slowly and in a quiet voice.)

For the next 400 years, God said nothing. He was silent.

(Pause for a moment and allow the kids to sit in the silence.)

Now God’s people would simply have to wait for the coming Savior who would shake the world.

Slide23

“Big Bible Story Questions” Graphic

At the end of the Bible story have the kids turn briefly to their small groups and discuss the following questions

:

For Younger Kids: What did you find interesting about this story? Why do you think God made the Israelites wait for their Savior instead of giving it to them right away?

After a few minutes, draw their attention back to the teaching area.

Slide24

Tech Que: “Shake it Up” Title Graphic

Hundreds of years before it even happened, God told His people about an event that was going to shake the world. Ever since Adam and Eve first disobeyed, God’s people had to offer sacrifices to cover their sins up. But now Jesus was coming! He was going to be the ultimate sacrifice that didn’t just cover our sins up, but completely washed them away. Through the words of the prophets, God gave

hope

to the world.

Slide25

Hope. You’ve all heard that word before, haven’t you?

(Kids respond.)

If you’re on a sports team, you might say something like, “Oh…I hope we win our game today!” What are some of the other things kids hope for?

(Take answers from the kids. Share with the kids something you’ve “hoped” for in the past.)

Slide26

When you hope for things like these, is it guaranteed that they’ll happen?

(Let kids respond.)

No way! When we use the word “hope” like this, it’s just something that we really want to happen, but there’s no promise or guarantee that it will. I want to tell you about a different kind of hope, though. It’s the kind of hope the Bible talks about. In the Bible, hope means that you’re waiting for something good to happen because God

promised

it would.

(Invite the kids to repeat the definition with you.)

Slide27

Tech Que: Hope: Waiting for something good to happen because God promised it would.

In our story today, God’s people had hope that a Savior would one day come to die for their sins. Was that just wishful thinking? No way! The Israelites were waiting for the Savior to come because God had

promised

it to them through Isaiah and the other prophets. Their hope was in God! In fact, take a look at this Bible verse.

Slide28

Tech Que: “But now Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you.” Psalm 39:7

Did you hear that? Our hope is in the Lord. That means instead of just wishing for something really good to happen, we can put our hope in Jesus! During Christmas time, it can be really easy to get caught up in hoping for this present or that present. But this Christmas, let’s try to remember that the greatest hope of all time came through the greatest gift of all time—Jesus!
