Have you ever seen a butterfly and chased it around your backyard trying to catch it? A butterfly goes through some pretty amazing changes in its lifetime. Let’s learn more about the life cycle of a butterfly!Slide3

EggsEggs are the first stage in the life cycle of a butterfly.The eggs are tiny and round or oval shaped. The female butterfly will usually attach the eggs to leaves. Eggs can be either yellow, green or white.

Some species of butterflies lay only one egg, while some can lay up to hundreds of eggs.

EggsThe yolk of the egg nourishes the larva that is inside. Whenever the larva is ready to hatch, it eats its way out of the egg.After hatching, the larva will usually eat the egg and the leaf that it was hatched on.

CaterpillarThe caterpillar stage is the second stage in the life cycle of a butterfly.The caterpillar stage lasts between 3-4 weeksCaterpillars are constantly eating.Caterpillars shed their skin multiple times while they are growing.

CaterpillarMost caterpillars are herbivores, which means they only eat plants.Caterpillars can be found in many different habitats all over the world. Caterpillars are preparing themselves for the chrysalis stage.

ChrysalisThe chrysalis stage is the third stage in the life cycle of a butterfly. After the caterpillar has shed its skin 5 times, it becomes a pupa.The pupa forms the chrysalis, a hard covering. The chrysalis is also known as a cocoon.

ChrysalisThe pupa does not eat while it is inside the chrysalis. Many changes are going on inside of the chrysalis. The pupa is growing six legs, antennae, and wings while inside of the chrysalis. The transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly happens in the chrysalis stage.

ButterflyThe butterfly stage is the final stage in the life cycle of a butterfly.After being in the chrysalis for 10-15 days, the butterfly comes out. Butterflies drink the nectar out of flowers.

The average life span of an adult butterfly is 20-40 days.

ButterflyThere are around 17,500 different species of butterflies. Butterflies have bright, colorful wings with unique patterns. Butterflies have taste receptors on their feet. Butterflies are found all over the world.
