Long Gateway Islands
Moody Farm Rd. - Parham Park Conceptual Design
Before
After
Provides a safe place for pedestrians to cross Soco Road, but also aids to slow traffic as motorists naturally slow down because the brick pavers and island create intrigue and make the road feel like a “slower road.” By having multiple island locations, this driving mentality will carry throughout town while also making it more beautiful.Slide7
Refuge Islands
Operating much like the current pedestrian refuge areas, said areas allow pedestrians the safety of having a pedestrian safety zone in the middle of Soco Road which turns the difficulty of crossing 5 lanes of traffic at one time into crossing only two lanes at a time.Slide8
Rectangular Rapid Flash Beacons (RRFB’s)
RRFB’s improve pedestrian safety by serving as a lighted signal to motorists that a pedestrian is within a crosswalk. RRFP’s are especially helpful when there are no red lights or stop signs present. Slide9
Narrow Travel Lanes
By narrowing the lanes of Soco Road, traffic will be calmed as the road will again feel smaller, which will make motorists naturally slow down as the road does not feel so “wide open.” Slide10
Bicycle Lanes
As an added bonus to narrowing the lanes of Soco Road, a 4 foot bicycle lane would be able to be added within the current paved structure, which would open up greater opportunities for multi-model transportation and recreation within Town. Also, the addition of the lane would add a 4 foot buffer between vehicles on the road and pedestrians on the sidewalk.Slide11
Shading Structures & Benches
One possible further improvement that could be made to crosswalks besides what could be done within the current right-of-way, would be to add beautified bulbs on to each side of every crosswalk. These areas would serve as small pocket parks and allow for nodes throughout town for residents and visitors alike to enjoy the beauty of the valley. Slide12
