Multiplying Fractions Review Let’s review what to do!

Multiplying Fractions Review https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fraction-arithmetic/arith-review-multiply-fractions/v/multiplying-a-fraction-by-a-fraction https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fraction-arithmetic/arith-review-mult-mixed-num/v/multiplying-mixed-numbers Watch how it’s done!

Just Follow These Easy Steps! Multiply the numerators and write down the answer as your new numerator. Multiply the denominators and write down the answer as your new denominator. Simplify.

Example 1 5 8 x 3 4 = 15 32 There are no common factors for 15 and 32, so this fraction cannot be simplified.

Example 2 3 4 x 2 9 = 6 36 This fraction can be reduced. Divide the numerator and denominator by the GCF, which is 6. = 1 6

Multiplying by a Whole Number If you want to multiply a fraction by a whole number, turn your whole number into a fraction by placing a 1 as the denominator. If your answer is improper, divide the bottom into the top. 4 5 x 20 1 = 80 5 = 16

Another Example 15 x 1 6 1 = 15 6 15 and 6 have a GCF of 3. = 5 2 Five halves is improper, so we divide the bottom into the top. 2 5 2 4 1 2 1 2

Simplifying Factors Before you multiply, you can make the problem simpler. You can find the GCF of any numerator and denominator. Find a factor that equally divides the top number and bottom number, divide, and rewrite the problem.

Example 1 5 7 x 8 16 In the second fraction, 8 and 16 have a GCF of 8. 8 ÷ 8 = 1 and 16 ÷ 8 = 2 1 2 Now, multiply with the simpler numbers. 5 x 1 = 5 and 7 x 2 = 14. 5 14

Example 2 2 3 x 5 12 The top of the first fraction and the bottom of the second fraction have a common factor. The GCF of 2 and 12 is 2. 2 ÷ 2 = 1, and 12 ÷ 2 = 6. 1 6 Now, multiply: 5 18

Dividing Fractions Overview

Dividing Fractions Review: Remember… KEEP CHANGE FLIP In order to divide fractions, you must actually multiply Step 1: Keep the first fraction the sameStep 2: Change the division to multiplication Step 3: Flip the second fraction to its’ reciprocalThen multiply and simplify

Dividing Fractions Review https://www.khanacademy.org/math/arithmetic/fraction-arithmetic/arith-review-dividing-fractions/v/dividing-fractions-example https://www.khanacademy.org/math/cc-fifth-grade-math/cc-5th-fractions-topic/tcc-5th-fractions-as-division/v/fractions-as-division Watch how it’s done!

To Divide Fractions: Rewrite the first fraction. Change the division sign to a multiplication sign. Flip the second fraction upside down.Multiply.

Reciprocal When you flip the second fraction, you are writing that fraction ’s reciprocal . 3 5 5 3

Example 1 1 3 ÷ 1 2 Rewrite: 1 3 x 2 1 = 2 3

Example 2 4 5 ÷ 4 9 Rewrite: 4 5 x 9 4 1 1 = 9 5 = 1 4 5

Example 3 12 ÷ 3 5 1 Rewrite: 12 1 x 5 3 4 1 = 20 1 = 20

Example 4 1 6 ÷ 2 1 Rewrite: 1 6 x 1 2 = 1 12

Thursday Small Group: Dividing Fractions

Dividing a Fraction by a Fraction x 1 2 4 1Basically, in order to divide fractions we will have to multiply.1 2 1 4 ÷ =

Dividing a Fraction by a Fraction x 1 2 4 1From this point, the problem can be solved in the way that you did for multiplying fractions. 1 2= 2 1 = 2

How to Divide Fractions Step 1 – Convert whole numbers and mixed numbers to improper fractions. ÷ 4 3 1 1 ÷4 3 = 1 This example is from a prior slide.

How to Divide Fractions Step 2 – Keep your first fraction. ÷ 4 3 11 = 31

How to Divide Fractions Step 3 – Change the operation to multiplication. ÷ 4 311 = 31 x

How to Divide Fractions Step 4 – Flip the second fraction. ÷ 4 3 11 = 31 x 1 4

How to Divide Fractions Step 5 – Multiply the numerators, then multiple the denominators. x 1 3 14 = 121

How to Divide Fractions Step 6 – Simplify (if possible). x 1 3 14 = 121 = 12

Dividing Fractions – An Example 2 9 3 4 = ÷ Since both are fractions, now you can Keep ( 1st fraction), Change (the operation to multiplication), and Flip (2 nd Fraction )…

Now, Multiply and Simplify 9 2 3 4 = 278 8) 273 x 24 3 3 8

Dividing Fractions 2 9 3 4 = ÷ 3 38 So,

Dividing Fractions – Another Example 2 8 1 3 = ÷ 2 Convert to improper fraction

2 8 7 3 = ÷ 8 2 73 x Keep Change Flip Dividing Fractions

Now, Multiply and Simplify 8 2 7 3 = 566 6) 569 x 54 2 2 6 9 2 6 ÷ 2 2 = 9 1 3 ÷

Dividing Fractions 2 8 = ÷ 9 13 So, 1 3 2

Dividing Fractions – More Examples

REVIEW: Dividing Fractions – Conceptual Understanding Remember, when you divide two fractions that are between 0 and 1, the quotient is going to be larger than at least one of your fractions.½ ÷ ½ = 1 ½ ÷ ¾ = 2/3

Great job!
