Due to the Treaty of Versailles signed after the First World War Germany had only been permitted an army of 100000 men with no air force and only a very small navy When Hitler came to power the army leaders were wary about Ernst Rohm leader of the huge Nazi paramilitary wing called the SA Hitler struck a deal with the army in which the army agreed to swear an oath to Hitler which would then apply to all new recruits Soldiers take oaths VERY seriously In return Hitler promised to remove the threat posed by the SA who wanted to be the new army of Germany which Hitler wanted to do anyway because he thought Ernst Rohm was too much of a threat to him personally .
