Learning objectivesBronze – be able to explain different categories f drugs and the impact on the body.Silver – be able to label drugs into categories and explain the reasons why.Gold – be able to Analyse the legal implications of category/class of drugs and form discussion around this.I am learning about different categories of drugs.

3. Starter TaskLook at the chart below and begin to discuss and label the drug category’s (Print chart for tables)You will be asked to feedback your answers.5 minutes

5. Label The Drug CategoryStimulants: are a class of drugs that speed up the messages between the brain and the body. They can make a person feel more awake, alert, confident or energetic.Empathogens: are a class of psychoactive drugs that produce experiences of emotional communion, oneness, relatedness, emotional opennessPsychedelics are a class of drug whose primary action is to trigger psychedelic experiences via serotonin receptor agonism, causing thought, visual and auditory changes, and altered state of consciousness

Dissociatives: are a class of hallucinogen which distort perceptions of sight and sound and produce feelings of detachment – dissociation – from the environment and self.Cannabinoids: are naturally occurring compounds found in the Cannabis sativa plant. Of over 480 different compounds present in the plant, only around 66 are termed cannabinoidsDepressants: are drugs that inhibit the function of the central nervous system (CNS) and are among the most widely used drugs in the worldOpioids: are a class of drugs that include the illegal drug heroin, synthetic opioids such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available legally by prescription, such as oxycodone
