Remind them that those assumptions and experiences influence their views.

5. THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCEPart of the US History curriculum. The lecture portion includes its background, concerns of the Convention attendees, and the final product.Students have an opportunity to work in groups, and come up with a newer issue/concern that they would put in such a document.

6. Class ExerciseYou are citizens in the colony of California. Your colony, and many others under the rule of the American empire are ready to fight for independence. A document expressing your reasons is needed to help convince others that this is the right cause at the right time. What issue/concern/complaint would you add to that document? Identify the issue/concern/complaint and provide a brief explanation/rationale for its inclusion.

7. “The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”Christopher Hitchens
