Sample Concepts / Plays

Slide12

Inside Zone Concept

This

Concept is designed to create both lateral and vertical movement of the defensive front. Lateral movement is created with the defensive line through the track of the offensive line. Linebackers are moved laterally through the initial path of the

runningback

. All linemen are stepping to the

playside

. When combinations lead to double teams, we need to create vertical movement –

dent the defense

. We will check the 40 series to a 3 Technique, and the 30 series to a 1 Technique.

ZONE BLOCKING RULES

If you are

UNCOVERED

, zone with your teammate to the

playside

. If you are

COVERED,

look at your backside (away from

playside

) teammate. If he is

COVERED

, you will block your defender man-on-man. If he is

UNCOVERED,

he will double team/combo block with you towards the LB.

Covered Linemen

Zone Attack Step

: A 4-6 inch quick lead step with the outside foot. Width and angle are determined by defender

s alignment. Aiming point is defender

s

playside

armpit.

Keep hips and shoulders square!

Inside hand on the near number.

Second Step:

gets blocker to the point of contact; gains ground on the defender – get it down fast and work vertical. Pound the ground! If defender A) honors reach – run him to the sideline, B) plays directly in – block will become combo- 4 hands on lineman (dent the defense), 4 eyes on LB, C) slants – get piece with inside arm to slow down for partner, keep outside arm free to go after LB.

Uncovered Linemen –

45 degree Zone Attack Step

: Open toe, knee and hip toward sideline. Take angle to overtake down lineman. First step attacks the backside hip of down lineman. Uncovered is stepping to assist the covered lineman to the

playside

. Initially you are a one-arm player. Eye on the LB; anticipate a slant from the down lineman. Engage the down defender with near arm. If defender A) honors reach – help him with a shot to the near hip, B) plays directly in – block will become combo- 4 hands on lineman (dent the defense), 4 eyes on LB, C) Slants – overtake him as partner goes to 2

nd

level.

Backside Linemen

Scoop

– take a wide open step with

playside

foot and crossover with second step - target

playside

armpit of first defender on or off LOS. Work to get backside hand on far number of the defender. Work to get square.

QB -

step off midline and read backside end to control his pursuit – you may pull and keep. If QB gets a pull read, find alley player and keep or bubble off his reaction.

BALLCARRIER –

First step is 45 degrees away from POA with backside foot; second step takes him to a track at PS leg of guard, RB is responsible for mesh with the QB. Get downhill, with eyes on 1

st

down linemen outside the center.

BACKSIDE RECEIVERS

–If there are two or three receivers to the backside, the inside receiver will run Bubble. If QB gets a pull read, find alley player and keep or bubble off his reaction. If single receiver, run 2 step hitch and sit.

Stretch Concept

This Concept is a play designed to get the defense moving laterally across the field to create seams for the

runningback

to cut

upfield

. Each lineman is working to reach and overtake the next man on or off the LOS

. The end man on the LOS may make a Fold Call with the next man inside based on defensive alignment.

Playside

must get off the ball aggressively with power to create movement at the POA

dent the defense. Never allow penetration; if the down defender wants to run laterally, take him all the way to the sideline. Backside linemen get off the ball with speed in mind, sealing off backside pursuit while attempting to reach 2

nd

level defenders.

ZONE BLOCKING RULES

If you are

UNCOVERED

, zone with your teammate to the

playside

. If you are

COVERED,

look at your backside (away from

playside

) teammate. If he is

COVERED

, you will block your defender man-on-man. If he is

UNCOVERED,

he will double team/combo block with you towards the LB.

Covered Linemen

Attempt to rip your backside arm and shoulder through the defender

s

playside

armpit. Over reach and rip under the defender to slow him down for the uncovered lineman. The wider the shade, the bigger the angle you must take on your first step. Work for

playside

hand in armpit, backside hand on sternum. On third step, work to square the defender and drive him off the ball. If the defender is still head up, think overtake by inside lineman. Rip and reach through his outside half to second level.

Uncovered Linemen – Take a wide first zone step and block anything that runs between the covered down lineman and yourself. The angle of the first step is adjusted to gain outside leverage on the down defender. Read his near hip. If the next down lineman comes inside, overtake him. If you can

’t overtake in three steps, climb to the second level.

TE – based on weekly preparation, make either a fold call or a combo call with your tackle.

B Back –

Freeze until ball hits Qb’s hands. Open with playside foot on a path aimed one yard outside of the TE, or where the tightend would be. Be patient initially, chasing the outside leg of the TE. Key end man on LOS, watching for possible fold block from TE/Tackle. Only attempt to get the edge if the defense allows it. If you see a window inside, take it up the field and turn it on. QB – Get on your horse to get the ball to the RB on his path, carry out Sprint PAP fake.JET

: Is Stretch with the A or Z in motion as the ballcarrier. B and QB carry read option fake on backside EMLOS. As a Read complimentary play, we will call JET READ. This play is called to the 3 tech, and will require a ride and read of the 3 tech. By the QB. If 3 tech. stays put give the stretch, if the 3 tech runs to defend the stretch, pull and run up inside.
