Elements of a short story

Character A character is a person, or sometimes even an animal, who takes part in the action of a short story or other literary work.

Setting The setting of a short story is the time and place in which it happens. Authors often use descriptions of landscape, scenery, buildings, seasons, or weather to provide these settings.

Plot A plot is a series of events and character actions that relate to the central conflict. See plot notes for further information.

Conflict The conflict is a struggle between two people or things in a short story. The main character is usually on one side of the central conflict. On the other side, the main character may struggle against another character, nature, society, or even an internal problem.

Theme The theme is the central idea or belief in a short story.

Creative Writing An Introduction to Creative Writing

What is Creative Writing? A form of artistic expression that draws on the imagination to convey meaning through the use of imagery, narrative, and drama. This genre includes fiction (novels and short stories), scripts, screenplays, and creative non-fiction. Creative Writing Defined

Examples of Creative Writing Here’s the beginning of  A Movable Feast  by Ernest Hemingway: “Then there was the bad weather. It would come in one day when the fall was over. We would have to shut the windows in the night against the rain and the cold wind would strip the leaves from the trees in the Place Counterscarped. The leaves lay sodden in the rain and the wind drove the rain against the big green autobus at the terminal and the café des amateurs was crowded and the windows misted over from the heat and the smoke inside.”

Examples of Creative Writing Hilary Mantel, who won two Bookers for her books on the Cromwell family, does this extraordinarily well. Let’s see an example from her book,  Wolf Hall Boatman. River. Saint. He’s been travelling since early morning and in the saddle for the best part of two weeks on the cardinal’s business, and has now come down by stages – and not easy stages – from Yorkshire. He’s been to his clerks at Gray’s Inn and borrowed a change of linen. He’s been east to the city, to hear what ships have come in and to check the whereabouts of an off-the-books consignment he is expecting. But he hasn’t eaten, and he hasn’t been home yet. The cardinal rises. He opens a door, speaks to his hovering servants. ‘Cherries! What, no cherries? April you say? Only April? We shall have sore work to placate my guest, then’. He sighs. ‘Bright what you have. But it will never do, you know. Why am I so ill-served?’

Examples of Creative Writing Here’s a fragment from Cormac McCarthy’s  Blood Meridien , a book for which he won _ prize: “They traded the mule accoutered as it was for a Texas stock saddle, bare tree with rawhide cover, not new but sound. For a bridle and bit that was new. For a woven wool blanket from Saltillo that was dusty new or not. And lastly for a two and a half dollar gold piece. The Texan looked at this small coin in the kid’s palm and demanded more money but the harnessmaker shook his head and held up his hands in utter finality. What about my boots? said the kid. Y sus botas , said the Texan. Botas ? Si. He made sewing motions .”

300 Word Story Activity For this assignment you will get your “feet wet” on creative writing. In EXACTLY 300 words, write a short, creative piece of original writing . Include the 5 elements of a short story we discussed yesterday

Bell Work A nswers Tomorro w, we will be goin g to Tom ’ s birthday party. My friend ’ s house is big , red , and expensive. She looked at him and said , “I will be back in five minutes ! ”

300 Word Story Create a list of the five elements of short story below your 300 word story. For each element identify it in regards to your story. Did you use indirect or direct characterization? Did you utilize strong diction? Imagery? Also, identify the exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution. If you do not have ALL of the above do you really have a short story?

Creative Writing and It’s Elements

Creative Writing Creative writing is any type of writing that goes outside the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of writing. Creative writing utilizes plot, setting, and character development in a way that is new and innovative.

Character There are usually several characters in a short story or creative writing piece. The main character or protagonist (hero) is usually against the antagonist (character with which the main character struggles), which leads to the overall conflict.

Setting- Time and Place Time: The time period in which the story takes place can impact the plot and the characters, depending on the limitations of that time period. Place: The physical location of the setting. Authors usually use descriptive language to describe the setting instead of just telling the reader the exact location.

Plot- Situation/Challenge The plot consists of a basic situation, rising action, climax, falling action, and a resolution. The situation or conflict is a struggle that the main character has within the story. This can occur with another character, nature, society, or his/her self.

Hodge Podge Story activity In groups of approx. 3, roll the dice to determine the elements of your story You will each roll the dice 4 times to come up with your elements (everyone will have a different combo of characters, setting, and conflict) Once you have all of your elements start writing your story Be creative and make sure your elements all weave together seamlessly!! Time allowing, I may ask you to switch stories with someone and continue where they left off- it’ll be a surprise!!

Snowball Procedures Make a circle around the room, facing the middle Make sure no one is in front of behind you (shoulder to shoulder only) Crumble your paper up Gently toss it into the middle of the room (do not be over dramatic) Walk (don’t run or push others!) and pick up a NEW story. If you end up with one you’ve ever had, trade with your shoulder partner

Writer 2 Smooth the paper out and look at your new picture Read the first part of the story Writer 2 is responsible for continuing the plot, developing the characters further, and introducing conflict Write until I say stop
