Call to Worship:

“We Have a Testimony!”

(Based on Galatians 1:11-24)

One: Come, you have a story to tell.

Many: Once we were lost and could not find our way

But Jesus, who came to seek and save the lost, found us!

 Slide3

One: Come, you have a story to tell.

Many: Of being in prison,

held by someone or something

that would not let go

Then, one day, the dungeon shook

the chains fell off

and God set us free!Slide4

One: Come, you have a story to tell.

Of rescue, of provision, of healing, of a vision of the Living God.

All: We come to worship;

We come to pray;

We come to sing;

We come to praise;

We have a testimony!

Prayer for the Poor

Jesus, you said that the poor would be with us always --

and they are here.

On street corners in blistering 100-degree heat

In tent cities, away from the tourist attractions.

They are here

Women and children

Young folks and old folksSlide11

Some displaced suddenly

Others who slid into the abyss

That hides them from overly-genteel hearts.

The poor are among us.

Here they are, Jesus

Hungry and thirsty

In need of a doctor and a bath

Desperation in a land of plentySlide12

Ragged and shoeless

But criticized

For not pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.

Wake us to the humanity of the poor ones,

O God, and shift our eyes from "us" and "mine“ -- to these who are Thine. Amen.

Small

group discussion questions [10 minutes]:

1

. Discuss Dr. Heath’s statement: “The more we extract people from their context, the less missional they become.” Agree or disagree? Explain.

2

. Review the ways that Dr. Heath described mature Christians in the missional model of church and the extractional model of church. How would members of your congregation define a mature Christian? Slide19
