Taxis vs. Kinesis

Kinesis:

simple change in behavior in response to

stimuli

Movement without direction/random

Animals move fast when unhappy and slow when happyTaxis: an automatic movement from or to a stimuliChemotaxis – movement towards a chemicalPhototaxis – movement towards light Slide4

Animal Behavior

Behavior is either INNATE or LEARNED

Innate

: developmentally fixed. In the genes. Nature.

Learned

: modified by experience. Nurture. All animals are selfish (exception is the rare altruistic behavior). They will do whatever helps them to survive and reproduce.Slide5

Classical Conditioning

C

lassical

conditioning shows automatic and involuntary behavior that results from placing neutral signals before a reflex

.Slide6

Operant Conditioning

Operant conditioning includes reinforcement or punishment after a behavior which leads to strengthening or weakening of voluntary behavior.

Classical: uses neutral stimulus to modify behavior

Operant: uses positive and negative stimulus to modify a behavior Slide7

Stimulus-Response Experiment

Basically, we see if an external stimulus issues a modification in behavior (response) Slide8

Choice Chamber Slide9

Keep in mind

Simple is not bad. Remember, you are only testing ONE variable. You must control for everything else.

I can get you crickets and

fruit flies

. You can pick any animal you want.

Rollie pollies popular too.Make sure you can start and finish your experiment within the first 45 minutes of class. Next time you will come in and:

Do experimentGet resultsGraph resultsRun statistics (chi-square)Write conclusion
