Who is Francis Marion?Born in 1732 in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Parents: Gabriel and Esther Marion
At age 6 he moved to St.George.
At age 15 he suffered an accident that made him decide to stay in land. Slide4
French-Indian War and

revolution
:
Joined a militia company in 1757.
Fought against the Cherokee Indians.
Returned home in 1761 and in 1773 he bought his own plantation (Pond Bluff).
In 1775 he was elected to be part of the South Carolina Provincial Congress.
Participated in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island on June 28, 1776. Slide5Slide6
1779: Siege of SavannahMarch 1780: Francis sprained his ankle. Marion formed a small unit (20-70 men). Slide7
Marion’s men liberated 150 American prisoners. General Lord Charles Cornwallis ordered the loyalist militia to capture Marion. Colonel Tarleton gives Francis Marion the name of Swamp Fox. Started working with Continental Commander Nathanael Greene. Slide8
Later Life:
Elected to the South Carolina state senate in 1781, 1782 and 1784.
Married Mary Esther Videau.
1790: helped to write the South Carolina state constitution.
